Never Stop Learning: Why Continuous Training is the Lifeblood of Your Artistry

In the ever-evolving landscape of the performing arts, stagnation is not an option1. To stay relevant, competitive, and creatively fulfilled, continuous training is essential2. Think of it as your personal research and development (R&D) department, constantly fueling your artistic growth and expanding your skill set3.

The Investment in Yourself

Just as companies budget for R&D to innovate and stay ahead, performers must invest in their own development to remain at the top of their game4. This investment can take many forms:

  • Formal Classes: Acting, singing, dance, directing, and editing are all skills you can learn in a classroom setting5. Seek out reputable instructors and schools that align with your goals and interests6.
  • Workshops and Seminars: These intensive sessions provide a deep dive into specific topics or techniques and offer valuable insights and networking opportunities7.
  • Private Coaching: One-on-one coaching can provide personalized feedback and guidance, helping you hone your craft and overcome challenges8.
  • Online Courses and Tutorials: The internet is a treasure trove of educational resources9. Explore platforms like Masterclass, Skillshare, and YouTube for a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips10.
  • I’ve become a huge fan of Masterclass a d Audible. While driving to gigs, sometimes in the car 4-10 hours a day, listening to an acting book on tape feels like being in the class. Masterclass has numerous sessions on comedy (Steve Martin, Judd Apatow), dozens of comedy writers, learning how to improvise Jazz from Herbie Hancock, produce from Alicia Keys, etc. The only one that is bad is the singing class. No names here, but it’s HORRIBLE.

Budget-Friendly Training: Resourcefulness is Key

When funds are tight, there are plenty of ways to continue your training without breaking the bank11.

  • Free Improv Sessions: Many improv schools offer free or discounted drop-in classes for beginners, which is a great way to develop spontaneity, quick thinking, and comedic timing12.
  • YouTube Tutorials: Learn accents, makeup techniques, or basic video editing from home for free13.
  • Community Theater: Participating in community theater productions allows you to gain experience and learn from fellow actors and directors14.
  • Bartering: You can exchange your skills for lessons or workshops with other artists or professionals15.
  • Libraries and Museums: Many of these institutions offer free lectures, workshops, and performances that can enrich your artistic knowledge16.

Expanding Your Repertoire: Versatility is Valuable

In today’s competitive market, being a multi-faceted performer can open doors to a wider range of opportunities17.

  • Learn an Instrument: Even basic piano or guitar skills can enhance your performance capabilities and make you more marketable18.
  • Master New Monologues and Songs: Continually add to your repertoire to showcase your versatility and appeal to different casting directors and audiences19.
  • Develop New Acts: Create original performance pieces that highlight your unique talents and perspective20.
  • Explore Different Genres: Step outside your comfort zone and experiment with different performance styles to discover hidden talents and broaden your appeal21.

Remember, the day you stop learning as an artist is the day you should retire22. Embrace the challenge of lifelong learning. It will not only keep your skills sharp but also fuel your passion, creativity, and overall career satisfaction23.
