Introduction & Dedication
This book has been 20 years in the making. I officially started my comedy journey in 2002, but I had been acting for over ten years and playing music even before that. My wife and I then pivoted into comedy. At first, it was a way to showcase our talents for agents and casting directors. By 2003, it was our primary source of income, and by 2005, we were able to quit our day jobs.
In 2004, while auditioning our show, Improv 4 Kids, for Montgomery County Maryland Public Schools, a theater specialist on the panel of judges suggested I write a book. I had many ideas, but none felt coherent or cohesive enough to publish. Finally, during the pandemic, I published my first book, “Improv on Zoom.” I’m still making edits to that one! I promise I’ve been much more thoughtful with this book.
This book is dedicated to all the teachers, students, fans, and clients who have become like family and friends over the years. I hope it will be a valuable resource for many.
Taking a cue from an Amazon comment about “Improv on Zoom,” I’ve separated my improv tips from the games. You’ll find a list of games, followed by a few sample lesson plans.
I should warn you that the tone of this book varies. Sometimes I’m speaking as a teacher to professional artists, other times to corporate clients, and other times as if I’m leading a professional development session for teachers.
After 20 years, nothing makes me prouder than seeing my own students thrive and new students discover themselves through improvisation.
When in doubt, remember my #1 rule: “HAVE FUN but never at another’s expense!” And of course, the homework: “Start every day with a smile!”
Let yourself enjoy life. And if you want the world to smile more at you, lead by example!
