I’ll never forget when my friend Asia Kate Dillon, who plays the brilliant Taylor Mason on Showtime’s Billions, shared the meaning of their tattoo on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan. “Einfühlung”—the German word for “empathy.” It struck me that this simple word, so core to human connection, is actually a relatively new concept in our vocabulary.
Empathy: A History Lesson
The English word “empathy” was coined in the early 20th century, a translation of the German “Einfühlung.” Before that, we had words like “sympathy” and “compassion,” which dance around the edges of the concept. Empathy, however, dives deeper. It’s the ability to not just understand someone’s feelings, but to truly feel them alongside them.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ): The Secret Sauce
The idea of emotional intelligence (EQ) gained steam in the 1990s with the work of Daniel Goleman. EQ encompasses a whole range of skills:
- Self-awareness: Knowing your own emotions and how they impact you.
- Self-regulation: Managing your emotions in healthy ways.
- Motivation: Finding your inner drive.
- Empathy: Truly connecting with the feelings of others.
- Social Skills: Building and maintaining positive relationships.
Great leaders, teachers, and parents have intuitively understood these concepts for millennia, even if they didn’t have the exact words for it. But the formal recognition of EQ opened a new door for understanding why some people excel at interpersonal relationships and leadership.
Why Empathy Matters Now More Than Ever
In our fast-paced, increasingly digital world, genuine empathy can feel like a rare commodity. We’re bombarded with information and opinions, often forgetting to slow down and truly listen to each other. But here’s the thing: empathy isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s a critical skill for creating strong teams and building a better world.
The Improv Connection: Empathy in Action

Improv comedy might seem like an unlikely training ground for empathy, but it’s a powerful tool. In improv, you have to be fully present, listening intently to your scene partners. You have to accept their ideas and build on them. There’s no room for judgment or ego. It’s all about collaboration and trust.
Through improv exercises, we can practice putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes, seeing the world from their perspective. We can learn to respond with compassion and understanding, even when we disagree. This translates directly to real-life situations, whether it’s a challenging conversation with a colleague or a difficult negotiation.
