PRESS CONFERENCE How to play Improv Games

Press Conference is a fun guessing game that gets the whole team involved.

Staging:

  • One player, the “Guest of Honor,” is sent outside the performance space (ideally to a separate room or hallway).
  • The remaining players sit in the audience or stand on either side of the stage, acting as reporters.

Sample MC Set Up:

“Get ready for a press conference with a twist! We’re going to send one of our players to our state-of-the-art soundproof booth. (Gesture dramatically towards a door.)

(To the chosen player) Please step outside and make sure you can’t hear anything that’s happening in here. You can hum a tune, sing the Smurf theme song, or do whatever it takes to block out the noise. (If possible, have someone escort the player out and ensure they aren’t listening in.)

While they’re gone, we need your help, audience. I need three things from you:

  1. A famous celebrity or fictional character.
  2. Something completely unrelated to that person – maybe a product they’re launching, a major announcement they’re making, or a bizarre hobby they’ve taken up.
  3. A location for this press conference, again, completely unrelated to the first two choices.

Got it? Great! Now let’s welcome back our special guest with a round of applause.”

(The Guest of Honor re-enters the room.)

Game Play:

  1. The Press Conference Begins: The MC introduces the Guest of Honor, and the reporters start asking questions.
  2. Deduction and Improvisation: The Guest of Honor must figure out who they are, why they’re there, and where they are based on the reporters’ questions and the audience’s reactions.
  3. The Reveal: The Guest of Honor eventually announces who they are, why they’re holding a press conference, and where it’s taking place.
  4. Continued Q&A: The reporters continue to ask questions, delving deeper into the absurd situation and the Guest of Honor’s motivations.

Tips:

  • Creative Questions: Reporters should ask open-ended and imaginative questions that provide clues without giving away the answer.
  • Active Listening: The Guest of Honor should listen carefully to the questions and the audience’s reactions to glean information.
  • Embrace the Absurdity: The fun of this game comes from the ridiculous scenarios and unexpected twists.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Be Wrong: The Guest of Honor doesn’t have to guess correctly right away. The process of figuring it out is part of the entertainment.

Why This Game Works:

  • Improvisation Skills: Challenges players to think on their feet and create a character and backstory in real-time.
  • Deduction and Observation: The Guest of Honor must use their powers of deduction to piece together the clues.
  • Audience Participation: The audience gets to be involved in creating the scenario, adding to the fun and unpredictability.
  • Humor and Surprise: The bizarre situations and unexpected revelations create laughter and keep the audience engaged.
