Picture this: A shy kid who never raises their hand in class is standing on a stage at the Broadway Comedy Club in Times Square, making an entire audience laugh. Not because they were pushed. Not because they were forced. Because something in that room made them feel safe enough to try. That’s what our improv shows and classes do. And we’ve been watching it happen every single week since 2003.

IMPROV 4 KIDS ON TOUR

Improv 4 Kids is the educational outreach arm of New York Improv Theater, delivering professional interactive comedy shows, workshops, residencies and field trips to K-12 schools, libraries, community centers and family events from DC to Boston and beyond. Since 2002 we have performed for over 8,000 student and family audiences across the country.

We are NYC Department of Education vendors. We daily host student groups from around the world at our Broadway Comedy Club home base in Times Square, and our teaching artists tour schools, summer camps and community events nationwide.

What We Offer

  • School Assemblies — Our signature interactive musical comedy show for K-12 audiences. Every performance is improvised from audience suggestions — no two shows are ever the same. Kids don’t just watch. They become part of the show.
  • Field Trips to Times Square — Bring your class to our Broadway Comedy Club home base for an unforgettable New York City experience. Students perform alongside professional comedians on a real stage. They brag about it for weeks.
  • Workshops & Residencies — From single sessions to multi-day residencies, our teaching artists work directly with students to develop improv skills, build confidence and strengthen classroom community. We customize every program for your school’s specific needs.
  • Professional Development for Teachers — Yes, teachers too. Our PD sessions bring the power of improv to faculty development — building communication, creativity and team cohesion among staff with the same methodology we use with students.
  • Virtual/Zoom Programs — NYC snow day? Remote learning? No problem. We pioneered virtual improv programming in 2020 and have delivered thousands of hours of online shows and workshops for students nationwide.
  • Youth Classes & Comedy Camps — Weekly Saturday classes at Broadway Comedy Club, spring sessions, spring break camps and summer camps. Students develop real improv skills alongside a community of peers who become lifelong friends.

More Than Entertainment — Real Educational Impact

Improv isn’t just funny. It’s a powerful educational tool that develops skills no textbook can teach:

  • Creativity and spontaneous thinking
  • Public speaking and communication
  • Active listening — the #1 skill of great leaders
  • Self-confidence and self-awareness
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Social-emotional learning (SEL)
  • Focus, body awareness and non-verbal communication

And it does all of this through play — meaning students don’t even realize how much they’re learning while they’re too busy laughing.

What Teachers, Principals and Tour Operators Say

“OMG it was awesome! Truly one of the best activities I’ve ever seen take place here at Summit! The way they related to the kids was terrific, and the activities worked on so many pragmatic language skills in such an effective way — body awareness, eye contact, voice, non-verbal cues, word association and storytelling. Almost all of the kids looked like they were having a fantastic time, and it was an activity where shy kids could interact with others in a very structured, comfortable way.”

— Lisa Palotti, Speech Teacher
Summit School, Queens, NY

“The kids truly had an amazing time. It is the mark of a truly successful trip when even the teachers are in a good mood on the bus ride home. Generally, students love field trips up until we get there, at which time they list all the reasons the trip is boring. This time, the students were too busy enjoying themselves to talk to each other at all. On the way home, they could not stop talking about how much fun they had.”

— Stephanie Pollack
Pearl River Middle School, NY

“I’ve been teaching for over thirty years and have seen hundreds of assembly programs. This group of family-friendly comedians offers an improv experience unlike any I’ve seen. The audience members — both children and adults — are completely engaged. Their various skits and games truly allow participants to discover their innermost comedic talents. This performance encourages children to explore their creativity and vivid imaginations to the extreme.”

— Eileen Benedict, Music Teacher
Edith L. Slocum Elementary School, Ronkonkoma, NY

“Everyone thought it was the best assembly we’ve ever had — and for a small school we do a lot of assemblies. Many teachers and staff are talking about going down to see the show in NYC.”

— Tara Cort, PTA President
Germantown Central School, NY

“It is often a challenge for a Cultural Arts Chairperson to find performers who are professional and innovative. Even students who were reluctant to volunteer in assemblies were eager to join in. It is rare to get a group that plays so well to all ages.”

— Betsy Sirk, Cultural Arts Chairperson
William H. Farquhar Middle School, Olney, MD
(3 consecutive years)

“Walt and his team are actually doing what they are teaching — that makes a difference. The entire experience benefits the group. They are able to take class in an actual club where professionals perform. That alone adds an immersion quality not available by hiring just an improv teacher to come to a studio. It’s been a favorite experience for many of my groups.”

— Matt Koke
E.E. Tours

“I have been taking groups to Walt for years. The kids learn a lot, have a great time, and his performances are always age appropriate. I love that the kids always brag to their friends that they performed on Broadway.”

— Ana Queeny Mederos-Blanco
Miami Tour Operator

The Field Trip Experience

There is something genuinely magical about a student from Queens or a class from Connecticut walking into the Broadway Comedy Club in Times Square and walking out an hour later having performed on a real stage.

They don’t just see a show. They are the show.

Every field trip includes an interactive performance where students are invited on stage to create scenes, songs and stories alongside our professional cast. Teachers consistently tell us it’s the most engaged they’ve ever seen their students — including the quiet ones. Especially the quiet ones.
