Four players stand shoulder-to-shoulder facing the audience, in a classical singer’s stance: feet together, fingers intertwined with a slight lift of the elbows and chest cavity.

Sample MC Set Up:

“Get ready for a musical adventure! We’re playing Madrigal, a game that blends improv with choral singing. Don’t worry if you’re not a trained vocalist—it’s all about having fun and creating a unique soundscape.

To get started, I need some headlines. What’s happening in your world, the state, country, or even the universe? Any juicy celebrity gossip? Any exciting sports news?”

(Get four headline suggestions from the audience. For the fourth player, try getting something different, like “Things you don’t want to hear from your parents/boss/teacher.” Pick the three funniest and assign them to the fourth player.)

Game Play:

1. Assign Headlines: Give each player a headline, ensuring the fourth player gets the three “unwanted phrases.”
2. Musical Structure: Explain the 8-beat structure of each line and encourage players to think melodically and rhythmically. Madrigals are not about perfect harmonies; they’re about the interplay of melodies and counter-melodies, creating both beautiful harmony and interesting dissonance.
