We do a lot of outdoor shows in backyards, whether it be improv comedy, stand up comedy, or murder myinstallations. Event & Theatrical lighting is one of the cheapest ways to transform a space. Outside provides so much natural beauty, lighting provides a less is more approach. Here are a few ideas we found to transform you yard area. Every backyard is different. Depending on the number of shade trees, and weather, sometimes the moon and star provide a lot of natural lighting, or neighborhood lights. Think of lighting as creating areas of conversation, similar to the way you might organize furniture in a large room. Using various colored lights can create some fun moods. For me, at the bare minimum, you need to see th faces of the actors on stage, even if that is a corner of the yard, or on the deck or raise platform area. For improvised work, we don’t need Phantom of the Opera Effects. We have done many outdoor shows at sleep away camps and backyards with basic flood lights. For the rest of the yard, you want just enough to see where you are going an set a mood, without losing the beauty of the night. Especially for a murder mystery, light and shadow make film noir.
Need stuff today and can’t wait for Amazon delivery, Guitar Center and other music stores often have DJ lights. Go to Party City and even Walmart often has basic lighting in their garden center. Pick up some solar pathway lights, stick a few in the garden.
STAGE LIGHTING
Basic flood lights can be one of the easiest and cheapest ways to light an area. I don’t like these for general area lighting, as shown in the picture, but two or three of these are probably enough to light the staging area.
