Change Management (CM) is the structured discipline for ensuring that organizational changes—like adopting new technology or shifting company culture—are successfully implemented by focusing on the people side of the transition. It involves three core phases: first, preparing by defining the change, assessing its impact, and crafting a strategic vision; second, managing the transition through clear, constant communication, targeted training to build new skills, and active sponsorship from leadership; and finally, reinforcing the change by monitoring adoption metrics, addressing resistance, and embedding the new behaviors into the daily routine until the change is sustained as the new normal. CM ensures that the organization achieves its intended business outcomes by moving employees from their current way of working to the desired future state efficiently and with minimal disruption.
The Improv Superpower: Embracing “Yes, And…”
Improv training is a superpower in soft skills development—skills that thousands of books and lectures discuss. But playing improv games, under proper leadership and teaching arts, integrates these skills into the muscle memory, creating focus, listening, creativity, critical thinking, self-confidence, and more.
Everything in improv is about embracing the unknown and learning to say “Yes, And…” when every instinct screams “HELL NO.” (We always insert the disclaimer: if someone is putting you in actual physical, mental, or emotionally abusive situations, NEVER say yes. But our instinct is often to say NO—it’s millions of years of fight or flight. NO is often the lazy or insecure response.)
But teaching “Yes, And…” is not about training lemmings to accept change, blindly following orders. The goal is to embrace change as the opportunity it is, to inspire going past mere acceptance toward the creative and critical application of new plans.
In the case of AI, while most are terrified of possible career-ending tech, it’s the chance to train human teams to excel where you need the human touch—to become human skills ninjas. We talk about active listening, but Improv teaches how to be a better listener. Improv teaches how to be better at live presentation, far surpassing clumsy reading of notecards and pointing to PowerPoints. Improv teaches you to be sales and service ninjas, developing a deeper connection with your clients organically, listening to their needs and crafting responses accordingly.
Practical Applications: Weaving Improv into the CM Process
Improv provides the specific skills needed to smooth out the people-side challenges at every stage of the Change Management process:
- Orienting Leadership: From day one, use improv to help train all your experts to better collaborate, present data with confidence, and be ready for the leadership challenges ahead. This builds the initial guiding coalition and clear communication flow.
- Preparing Team Leaders (The Front Line): Before rolling out new programs, prepare all your team leaders for the rollout. Improv will bring your team of leaders together, training the open mind to see potential and inspiration where most see scary unknowns.
- Preparing the Teams for Change: Use improv directly with teams to help them practice the “pivot on a dime” flexibility needed for new systems. It gives them a safe space to fail, accept new information, and build the confidence to engage with the coming changes.
- Stress Relief and Engagement: Use improv and other immersive, fun activities to help release stress at integral times. This fosters the lighthearted atmosphere needed to overcome resistance and maintain high energy during long, complex transitions.
- REGULAR REFRESHER MININCOURSES Reminding your teams to stay light on their feet, mentally and physically. Communicate openly. Stay focused. Do this by implementing the games learned in our workshops 2 minutes before a big meeting, or start every Monday with 5 minutes of fun. Improv does a lot, but perhaps, the most important factor is the physical, mental and emotional benefits of laughter itself, a cardio vascular AND social building activity. After a workshop or two of ours, you can lead a dozen or so games yoir self. Refer to our books and online resources to discover new books.
