It’s been 40 years, and the flames… flames, on the side of my face… are still burning bright.
Clue, the movie that taught an entire generation the true meaning of a “Red Herring,” is now a certified 40-year-old cult classic. It brilliantly turned a popular board game into a frantic, zany, and endlessly quotable romp. But its greatest legacy might not be on the screen.
In fact, Clue: The Movie arguably did more for the genre of Murder Mystery Dinner Parties than any Agatha Christie novel or Sherlock Holmes story.
The Mystery Genre is Booming, But Not Where You Think
Today, Murder Mystery may be the #1 entertainment genre in America. Each year, we might get a star-studded movie or two, a few prestige series based on a best-selling novel, and every decade or so, a gem like Netflix’s The Residence.
The appetite for a good mystery is stronger than ever. But the real action, the true descendant of Clue‘s chaotic spirit, isn’t just on your streaming queue. It’s happening every single night in homes and office parties.
Right now, right this very second, there are hundreds of private parties across America where a professional comic actor, or a full cast of characters, is entertaining a corporate group or a private dinner party for friends and family. The big-budget movies are just the appetizer, a tease. The main course is live, interactive, and happening in a banquet hall or living room near you.
What is a “Clue Party”?
We even have something we call a “Clue Party,” and it’s the lifeblood of holiday entertainment.
While it might have little resemblance to the movie’s specific plot (you probably won’t find a singing telegram girl), the show does involve the two key ingredients: discovering clues and interacting with crazy, original characters.
This isn’t a passive experience where you just sit and watch. It’s an interactive event that gets everyone involved. When you bring this kind of entertainment to a party, you’re doing more than just hiring a performer; you’re creating an environment that gets the entire guest list involved.
At the very minimum, everyone is a detective, a witness to actors playing out scenes, and dropping clues, interacting with guests. This is the classic Murder Mystery Dinner Theater style show, which works great for larger audiences or when you want a more professionally driven show.
Even more popular, some version of a CLUE PARTY, where you and your family, friends and/or colleagues are playing characters in a story and you have a DIY murder in a box OR you get a professional actor with their own scripts to be your detective and party MC.
