This summer has been such a joy, both at camp and on the road. I am very proud of our programs. I have former students working for me and one major Disney star. All of our camp staff this year are former students. I led 7 shows this past week alone with at least one former student on the team. Lots of proud happy tears. #iykyk I am a total sap when it comes to these kids (now 18-27 on the payroll!)
The last three Friday shows at camp delivered similar results. I keep saying 7/3 show was the best birthday present I could ever get – one of the est showcase of the past 5 years when just 2 hoirs earlier I think the kids had doubts.
The show we saw did not match the weird energy we felt 2 minutes before showtime. 7/10 Show featured SIX new students that all came in somewhat TERRIFIED on 7/6. That growth in just 5 days is a testament to my former students turned colleagues, and the general power of a proper comedy curriculum.
AND THEN… something happened performing EVERY SHOW this week – 5 libraries in Maryland, Mystic Seaport Museam as Pirates, Field Trip at the club, and 2 Madcapped Mysteries, my improvised mystery show, at a Brooklyn Basketball Camp.
At EVERY SHOW, it was pulling teeth getting kids on stage at first. By the end, kids were begging to join us on stage. My team, time and time again, shows the joy of creating the laughs that makes other want to participate. In fact, at the Maryland shows, we had shy kids turn into repeat fans, following us to 2 or 3 branches around Worcester County (Ocean City).
We spread joy and laughter, one show/class at a time. But my mission is to knock stage fright off the top of the list of phobias. Let’s destroy the grip of social anxiety on our kids…. OKAY, THIS WEEK…
