If you want to perform for huge audiences and get paid corporate-level rates, look at higher education.
Colleges and universities have massive student activity budgets. Campus Activities Boards (CABs) spend thousands of dollars every single month to bring in performers. They need entertainment for orientation week, homecoming, midterms stress relief, and weekend programming.
Getting booked on the college circuit takes a specific approach. Here is how it works and how to get your share of those campus budgets.
How College Booking Works
College booking is centralized around two main trade organizations: NACA (National Association for Campus Activities) and APCA (Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities).
These organizations run regional and national conferences. Talent buyers from hundreds of colleges sit in a room while artists showcase 10 to 15 minutes of their act.
After the showcases, schools pool their budgets through “block booking.” If five colleges in the same region book you on consecutive days, you save on travel, and they get a lower rate. You leave the conference with a full regional tour booked in one weekend.
What Colleges Are Buying
College talent buyers want high energy, reliability, and low hassle.
- Comedians and Improv Groups: Clean to PG-13 stand-up, interactive improv shows, and customized campus humor.
- Novelty and Game Shows: Interactive trivia, live game shows, and high-participation events where students win prizes.
- Musicians and Singers: Solo acts, acoustic duos, and bands for coffeehouse nights and outdoor festivals.
- Speakers and Facilitators: Workshops on mental health, leadership, diversity, and career building for student leaders.
How to Route and Pitch College Gigs
You do not have to showcase at a major conference immediately to land college gigs. You can start with direct outreach to regional schools.
Find the Director of Student Activities or the Campus Activities Board Advisor at local community colleges and universities. Send a short email with a link to a clean 90-second video reel.
Show them you understand their environment. Mention that your show is self-contained, easy to set up in a student center, and designed to engage college audiences.
The Business Side of Campus Gigs
College contracts are rigid. They usually operate on net-30 payment terms and require specific tax documentation (W-9 forms and vendor applications) before issuing checks.
Keep your paperwork organized. Once a university adds you to their approved vendor list, rebooking you next semester becomes extremely simple for them.
The college market is one of the lucrative paths for independent performers. A handful of solid campus dates can fund your creative projects for an entire semester.
