HAPPY HOUR IMPROV CLASS and why it’s the best idea I ever had!

HAPPY HOUR IMPROV CLASS best idea I ever had!

To be clear I am not bragging. I  am simply amazingly happy with tonight’s results. In many ways tonight’s success mirrors what so often makes Improv great. We make choices and then the final product far surpasses what anyone could imagine on their own. That team effort – as much or more than individual talents – is what leads to wondrous results.

Last year I started hosting Happy Hour showcases for NYC Teams. This led to a Happy Hour teambuilding program which is growing in popularity, especially after another “OMG THIS WAS GREAT” blog of mine following an event for Ernst & Young.

To be honest, this was a marketing ploy. I was just trying to fill slots in a class and hoped promise of beer and pizza might help. Tonight was fun but tn the last 15 minutes it really hit me.

I was watching 6 total strangers completely open up and share their life stories through various monologue and the all powerful park bench of truth. Now I have seen these games played with varied success. But somehow never like this.

Similarly how many times do you go out to bars, for the purpose of socializing with friends and to meet new friends. Once we arrive we throw up the walls to protect from the pain, guarding against jerks etc. Alcohol softens our resolve, but we still barely push out of our comforts zones, if at all.

Somehow combining food, drink and very basic Improv games reached exponentially greater levels one or the other could achieve alone. You can’t completely credit beer as only half of us consumed alcohol. The others drank bottled water. Perhaps it was Luigi’s pizza   (best in midtown). Perhaps it was the amazing leadership of Maggie Lalley who was simply brilliant in creating a warm and welcoming place to play, followed by great teaching moments.

I can claim to have discovered the perfect recipe but that would be too arrogant by far. Perhaps this plays more into the psychological safety kick I have been on lately. EVERYONE had their walls and guards down. EVERYONE participated honestly and 100%. EVERYONE showed us who THEY really are.  EVERYONE had fun and grew beyond themselves.

It was beautiful. Truly artistic. Not always funny, but always wonderfully genuin.

I feel like I really know who these people are and want to know more. I got to know my colleagues, Maggie, and our new intern, Colin. Thank you to all involved tonight. I have performed 5000+ Improv shows since 2002 and tonight ranked in the top 10 of my experiences because of all the above reasons.

Maggie Lalley, Monday Night Happy Hour Improv teacher

Maggie Lalley, Monday Night Happy Hour Improv teacher

So I welcome you to join us Mondays at 5:30. Drop by 15-30 minutes early. $20 cash at the door  (OR REGISTER ONLINE) includes a beer and I will have snacks every week. Not a beer drinker, no worries, we have wine, soda, juice, bottled water as well as wine… Stick around after class for the 8pm ON THE SPOT Improv Show, which has a team of top notch players creating the book for an original musical based on guest cabaret singers. OUR STUDENTS always get FREE tickets to our shows. There is a 1-drink minimum but the $25 cover is on us. CLICK HERE for full schedule of classes and shows

We also have a more traditional class Sundays 12:45 with Thomas Burns Scully. Sitting on the first class yesterday was fun too. Again a great group of talented artists – most of which are not future professional performers, but a fun group of college students, HR, teacher, Lawyer etc. Along with our Intern, Steven Prestia (who has been in our teen classes for past 5 years and recently an adult of voting age), Thomas has a great 8-week class planned, but welcome drop ins the next few sessions. If you have a great time, talk to Thomas about pro-rating the rest of the session. We never let folks drop in the last 3 weeks as we are too focused on putting our final showcase together. Afte rthe Sunday class is our Sunday matinee of LMAO IMPROV – think WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY as an off-Broadway revue.  CLICK HERE for full schedule of classes and shows

Join us Mondays at 5:30 for 2-hours of Improv Comedy. Every session starts with a series of warm-ups that develop strong team and individual performance skills plus creativity, community and leadership skill sets (critical thinking, public speaking, self-confidence, listening, focus etc). Then we play traditional performance games. We believe in a performance geared education. These are both classes and rehearsal for a performance at the end of 8 classes. Lessons Learned from John Steinbeck – Psychological Safety, YES! And…

thepearlEvery once a while I think of John Steinbeck’s THE PEARL. Of all the themes/parts of the novella, I remember the way Kino just stared at the ants. Observing and respecting nature.
His life is simple until he discovers that huge pearl. He does not know hate, greed, anger etc
By the end, after dealing with one too many man-made stressors he stomps the ants dead.
It’s hard to maintain that childlike innocence and simply appreciate the world we live.
When I teach Adults – and some teens – Improv, I instruct to think like a five year old. Let yourself be silly. Have fun (but never at another’s expense)! Open your mind free of judgement, insecurity etc
I teach psychological safety at corporate workshops. I preach creating a world in which EVERYONE feels physical, mental and emotional safety at work, school, home… This requires EVERYONE get on board. One weak link of ego or insecurity can rock the balance.

_____________________________________
Too often – most often – folks are hardened by the selfish and aggressive world around them.
I challenge ALL to fight the urge from within to become what we hate daily. Easier said then done. But worth the fight!!!
Do unto others as you would have done unto you…
Love Thy Neighbor
Instead in 2017 and recent decades, most do unto others that which is done to them… we become arrogant and/or pride in ignorant bliss as a defense mechanism. Instead of leading by example we fall into the traps.
It is a lot easier to take the path of the dark side. We are human. We have emotions.
it is much more difficult to stay positive and lead a happy life in the face of tragedy and daily judgements/resentments.
Daily I encounter someone – a total stranger – that gives me the snob look. The way I dress, talk, act is not good enough for them.
Daily I encounter someone – a total stranger – that gives me the look of resentment. The way I dress, talk, act looks like I have it way better in life.
I am quite happy in my status but by no means comfortable financially. Face it I am a working actor, but not a star. I have not had a survival job in years – unless you call producing this theater company my day job. But in over 10 years, I have not picked up a tray of drinks (except helping my own clients and guests at the club to see my show or take my classes). I have not worked in retail in 15 years. At age 45 I live in a house for the first time since leaving home 20 years ago. I could be a lot worse. I could be a lot better.
So if you were walking down the street, in the mall, at the grocery… what would you think when you passed me? Am I good enough, too good, or just right?
As far as I am concerned ALL OF YOU are just right the way you are. We all have room for improvement, but our desire to improve should never be out of jealousy. We should never covet. We should never feel shame or make others feel shame.
We all need to find a  balance of being content in who we are (supporting all around us for who they are) and the drive to better our selves.
The fact we are getting cast in the projects we want to work as actors does not reflect on us as people. Maybe we need to grow as artists to be good enough to be on TV, Broadway or Film, but that does not mean you are not good enough as a person.
So psychological safety starts with each individual being a better listener, giving all a fair shake. I mean REALLY listen, with your ears, ears, mind & soul. Breathe in what the others share. Think “YES! And…” like Improv teaches.
If you are on the aggressive side, take a step back. Quite often overbearing ego is an over compensation to insecurity. You are not innately fearful but when we chill out a bit, those thoughts of self doubt can creep in… I say let them. Just a bit. Let yourself be a little vulnerable. At first it will be a little scary, perhaps. In time you will learn to trust your team more and discover a world the blinders of ego have kept from you.
Sometimes, we need to be a little stronger. There will always be those that do not play nice with others, whether due to a malicious self-serving agenda, or totally just inconsiderate and unaware of the offense. You cannot control another’s thoughts and deeds. But you can choose (I know easier said than done) to not let their words and deeds control your life. When we learn how to laugh at ourselves, everything changes. Drop those defensive walls. A lifetime of harsh environments can make the walls tall and think.
We all need to play the part in stopping the endless cycle of ego and insecurity. They equally destroy team,,and equally destroy meaningful connections in private life as well.
In extreme cases we need to reach out for help. If you are under physical, mental or emotional threat GET HELP. You are not trapped. You ALWAYS have choices, no matter how difficult they are to see. You may have to CHANGE something or everything. You should not have to change everything because of another’s harmful behavior, but sometimes that is the only survival option. Don’t let fear or pride keep you from finding a safe space.
In any case do not let it continue. Do let the resentment and depression grow to the point it destroys you. Don’t wait to hit rock bottom to get the help you deserve.
EVERYONE deserve happiness. Don’t expect happiness to be delivered by an outside force. ONLY YOU can make it happen in the long term. If you work in a bad environment, find another job. If your friends are abusive, find new friends. If your family is abusive, move out.
EASIER SAID THAN DONE BUT NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!
What seems impossible starts with simple baby steps. Start taking those steps NOW. Not today, this very second!

PS I wish more folks lived the lessons learned in dramatic arts. Not to get political I sometimes think Donald J Trump watched Star Wars III, heard the line “So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause.” and thought, mmm, I get lots of applause so it’s okay to take away citizens’ liberties.

YES! And… could save the world – or at least Washington…

YES! And… could save the world! Seriously think about it.

If anytime someone said “BLACK LIVES MATTER”, with or without the #hashtag, we all – ALL – said “YES! And this is how I am going to help realize that fact.”

YES! And… could save the world!

I hope Donald Trump is listening…

hqdefault

Instead we often get, “NO, BLUES LIVES MATTER!” As if to say BLUE is more important than BLACK. The #blacklivesmatter movement is not a war cry, cry of help. Folks of various non-white skin tones feel under attack, the same ways my Irish relatives once were, as were Italian and any other new immigrant group.

Of course if you out of now where said BLUE LIVES MATTER or ALL LIVES MATTER I would respond just as quickly, “YES!”

But out of ignorance and/or fear, folks feel the need to reject simple reality. There is a total lack of empathy in virtually every argument made in Washington DC these days.

I respect one’s belief abortion is murder. I equally respect a woman’s right to choose. My personal view, PRO CHOICE is the politically conservative view.

I believe we often have too much restrictions on business. However, others that lift too many regulations are leading us to disaster. Folks seem to want to restrict a woman’s right to choose but letting Bernie Madoff and friends thrive at expense of others is fine.

Sure folks should have right to own guns, but surely we can agree regulating guns, at least as much as we regulate a car or driver’s license makes sense.

I do not hope to persuade anyone here to my beliefs. But I beg ALL to start working towards understanding the other side and try the YES And… technique outside of Improv class and shows.

Name one topic that has had an intelligent debate in the past 20 years. Perhaps you have been on the winning or losing side of a particular vote, but almost anything “accomplished” in DC since 2000 was enacted by Presidential Executive order OR by congress in the few years White House and Capitol building controlled by same party.

I remember in the mid to late 1980s when my civics teachers talked about polarization. By the 1990s I left all party affiliation in disgust for extreme left and right wing rhetoric. Neither GOP or DNC seemed to be a valid home for me. So many did the same as the country’s “independent” / moderate population grew. The result left a GOP & DNC in the hands of extremists.

When Barack Obama won, the GOP base decide it needed to go farther to the right. In recent weeks, after the win of Donald Trump, the DNC appears to be making similar cries to the left.(PS I hate Right/Left terms but suitable for this argument).

DC has become a world consumed with the word “NO!”

But imagine a DC that discovered the concept of “YES! And…”

Aaaaaahhhhhh…..elephantdonkey-love

(Excuse me while I take a moment of pure imaginary bliss…)

Imagine a DC where actual topics are discussed and debated with intelligence and facts, not emotions, opinions and beliefs.

Aaaaaahhhhhh…..

Imagine a world where everyone was looking out for everyone else, and not their own agendas for power….

Aaaaaahhhhhh…..

As GOP & DNC representatives go back and forth with their 5 minutes of time on the floor, imagine them starting every debate with  “YES! and…”

Aaaaaahhhhhh…..

No one individual has all the answers. No one position is ever going to right for everyone.

The only way to move forward is a healthy discussion – full of empathy for opposing view points, followed by debate, followed by a final compromise.

I challenge EVERY Senator, Congressperson and Presidential team member to embrace the YES! And.. philosophy. It cannot solve your problems, but it is a tool to finding common ground and working together with those of opposing view points to find solutions to very real problems.

If you do not like the trash talk about you and the extremely low approval ratings, start working together towards a more perfect union.

Psychological Safety in the Workplace, School and Home. YES AND…

Psychological Safety in the Workplace, School and Home. YES AND…
…the secret to Improv success is focusing on making the rest of the team look good/succeed, not your self. The result? The entire team is looking out for you…

From wiki
Psychological safety is a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk taking. In psychologically safe teams, team members feel accepted and respected. It is also the most studied enabling condition in group dynamics and team learning research.

Psychological Safety in the Workplace, School and Home.

YES AND…

Psychological Safety is a relatively new buzz word. Google released finding of a four-year study about team formation and success. The big conclusion was how Psychological Safety is the number one reason one team succeeds when another – all else being equal (combination of skills, experience etc) – fails.

Corporate

FROM How to Build Pschological Safety… In [Google’s] research, they found that the safer team members felt with each other, the better they did in almost every area of work. They were:

  • More likely to own up to their mistakes
  • Better partners to their colleagues
  • Less likely to leave Google
  • More likely to be open to diverse ideas

Psychological Safety is all about making EVERYONE on the team feel like a valuable member. Everyone feels they have a voice and a purpose. Everyone feels they are working in an environment promoting physical, mental and emotional safety.

We have all been in work, study and family situations where someone made us feel less than ourselves. While few have experiences fearing physical safety, many regularly fear emotional and mental safety.

For those that do not have those fears, there are often walls and defense mechanisms in place to survive, so these threats to our safety now go unnoticed (I fall into the this category often – my wife says I have avoidance issues lol). So often outwards signs of strength and ego are actual overcompensation for various insecurities.

In my experience ego & insecurity equally destroy teams and create fears, resentments and a break down in communication. Even many Improv Artists, while preaching “Yes! And…” act in a way that destroys team. I have been guilty at times, no matter how hard I try to create a safe place for all to play.

WHY?improv 4 kids

Ego and insecurity are human traits. It takes a conscious effort to constantly over come the pit falls. It is far easier to be miserable than happy – no matter how easy some make it look.

How many teams take a simple team build course, every year attending another routine, to only return to business as usual days – minutes – later.

In order to truly create that perfect environment, it takes great management/leadership. The team leader, school principal, family patriarch/matriarch needs to lead by example and then inspire the entire team to follow suit.

In order to build this environment, the team leader needs to regularly make everyone on the team feel valuable. The google study talks about a SNL habit lead by Lorne Michaels where Lorne will call upon someone that appears to be struggling. Dropping all discussion to focus on that team member, digging into why they are “OFF” that day, regardless of why – business or personal. That team member is reminded they are part of a supportive family.

Regularly (Daily) lead activities that create a fun work environment. When I lead team building workshops and professional development for teachers I always implore to play these games long after I have finished with their team. Start every meeting with ZIP ZAP ZUP to loosen up and build that team connection. Start every class with a one word story. Use other Improv games and exercises to help role play obstacles – sales, service, office communications etc

What is great about Improv as a path to psychological safety?

We are 100% application, not simply concept. We start with laughter. We have fun – but never at anyone else’s expense. The laughter breaks down the thickest of walls. The laughter alone builds self confidence as we forget to fear amidst the fun times. We do not start lecturing on the pitfalls of bad team behavior etc. Rather we just start playing games. We revert to being five year old children.

We then teach that the secret to Improv success (and any team) is focusing on making the rest of the team look good, not your self. The result? The entire team is looking out for you.

If you mess up, WHO CARES?

If someone else messes up, WHO CARES?

Stop judging yourself and others. Stop striving for perfection. Stop worrying about things being correct.  Suddenly, one by one, we start to look at the team, and the world, with more open minds and eyes and more importantly, ears.

It is THEN we start to talk about Improv techniques, as time permits.

  • YES And…
  • Listen & Respond
  • Be in the Moment
  • Who, Where, What

We cannot BE IN THE MOMENT when we are thinking ahead for ways to make ourselves look great, being prepared with the perfect funny word, joke or line of dialogue.

We cannot BE IN THE MOMENT when we are judging and worrying about what was said moments before.

But when we LISTEN to the team and RESPOND in turn, we often surprise ourselves how easy it is to trust team and self. Over time this process will build, but the second you release yourself from past and future woes, we can thrive in the present – which leads to a much brighter future.

Something else magnificent happens. We tap into a much deeper creative force driven by our subconscious minds. Our minds are an amazing tool, too often limited by conscious thought. We cannot keep all those memories and experiences fresh in our thoughts. We THINK to hard on a single idea which blocks all else form creeping in.

When our focus shifts, we can tap into ALL of our potential. tasks become far more manageable.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY and IMPROV…

The second I learned about the google study findings I introduced the term “Psychological Safety” into my corporate team building work. Soon later, working with a particularly troubled group of teens – they were amazing but the walls of fear were way too think for 14-16 year olds – I told them about the concept.

Their teachers asked “Who here feels psychologically safe?” NO ONE raised a hand. All felt they lacked safety in school. Many felt the same about the home. A few shared problems with physical abuse at home and school. It was freakishly uncomfortable, as that was no where near the direction I was heading, however amazingly enlightening. The teachers shared they wanted to pursue these troubles further, including involving child protective services and diving deeper into anti-bully curriculum etc.

At a school once, at the lunch following a 90-minute professional development workshop for teacher, the principal said “See those two? I thought they hated each other. I have never seen them together. Now they are laughing and discussing plans for a new project.”

We cannot fix everyone. There will always be manipulators and abusers. However most of those fighting the psychologically safe model do so out of their own defensive mechanisms. They have encountered one too many saboteurs to their own physical, mental and emotional safety. They make bad, often offensive jokes, trying to break the ice, forgetting they may be sending a cold chill over the room. They look out for “number one” because so many have tried to cut them out in the past.

Victims of abuse – any kind – usually do not care why they are victims, they just hate being victims.

But I think it is important for both sides to be aware, most of us are just trying to get by each day. Most do not wish us harm when the act in selfish, abusive ways. Many even think they are doing right by the team with “Tough Love” or poorly timed “Jokes”.

In order for any polarizing behavior to end, both sides need to drop walls. Both need to make effort to came back to a center of understanding. For some those walls are so think it seems impossible.

In my experience most begin to melt the second the team laughs together from positive forces. We begin to laugh at ourselves and WITH (not at) others. We let small mess ups go by without judgement. We stop and create a learning moment from larger mistakes, but again without judgement. Through it all we begin to make huge strides forwards as we stop fearing failure and judgement.

It starts with great leadership, but at some point we all, consciously or otherwise, need to make that choice to be part of the team.  One by one the walls will drop. The team will start to thrive and in turn so does the individual.

Very few individuals thrive through selfish actions. Many find minor short term success. But the process burns too many bridges.

In turn, by being a valuable team member, you become a valuable leader. You grow. Opportunity grows. You quickly expand your circle of teams.

So their are very good – selfish – reasons for becoming a great team player.

Why Mariah Carey was so Bad on New years Eve

I have been ranting on Twitter on and off since New Year’s Eve about the fiasco with Mariah Carey’s performance. Not for the same reasons most gossip and so-called news outlets have kept the conversation alive.

I turned off the TV after the Mariah Carey “performance” on January 31, 2016. On some level I did feel bad for the “Pop Diva” for not being able to hear the tracks etc But as the number continued I got angry.

I have been a professional performer for more than 20 years. I have been performing for nearly 40 at some level. At age 5, a piano teacher told me to never stop, no matter what. If you make a mistake, DON’T make a face. And as I tell my students at every class, the only ones that will know you messed up are your teacher and your Mom.

“MOM ALWAYS KNOWS. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THAT” I tell me students with a grin.

Mariah Carey broke that basic cardinal rule of live performance. #FAIL

Live performance is always an imperfect beast. And performing live for millions on TV in the freezing cold is always difficult for any serious artist. I played trumpet in a brass choir down at the DC Christmas trees. So cold I was almost in tears, but the crowd loved the carols and we felt justified in our suffering. We were not paid in money, just “feels” as the kids say on Twitter these days (or was that 3 months ago? lol).

If Mariah Carey was a dancer I could understand doing a lip sync. I understand why Britney or Madonna would lip sync because it is almost impossible to do the dances from some of their videos and sing. At least impossible for a pop diva. Any Broadway artist or otherwise TRAINED professional could get through it.

But most pop divas are not truly trained pros. They rely on tracks because they are not true musicians that could follow a band live. They are incapable of responding to live stimuli and recreate what a genius sound producer made them sound like in the studio.

So when all you have to offer are fading looks, a recorded voice you have not had in 10 years, perhaps you are doomed to fail eventually. Too bad it was on one of the biggest live broadcasts of your lifetime – anyone’s lifetime – but that is what happens.

And as I said on Twitter, my goal here is NOT to shame Mariah Carey. My hope is to inspire students of mine to spend one more hour every day working on your craft as an artist.

This debacle does not happen to real artists. Sure we have bad microphones and monitors, but we are professionally trained and experienced to deal with this.

Mariah Carey has been a professional recording “ARTIST” since 1990. This should have been cake. Instead she looked like a fool. Maybe it was the producers’ fault. Perhaps the sound guy played the wrong track. Perhaps it was even sabotage.

A true artist should be able to cope and get through the moment with far more grace. A true artist would never have let the audience know there was a problem.

I think there is also a lesson here to be learned about aging as an artist. Part of the problem is Mariah is still trying to be that 1990s pop diva. You need to reinvent yourself CONSTANTLY.

We all age. We all change as we age. Our voices change, especially when we are making unnatural vocal sounds that strain the vocal chords. The sound great in the studio but the chances of making those sounds live EVERY time are slim to none.

I have teen students that use to be kid students. They are discovering that they need to spend more time writing stand-up comedy material. They need to make better choices in Improv scenes. They can no longer count on being cute because they are 8. They have passed through puberty. Voices changed. Motivations changed.

Some former teen students are now in college. They are no longer under their parents roof.Fear of not being able to pay rent sets in… affording a metro card…

Skip ahead 5-10 years no we are talking marriage, kids, morgage etc etc etc In my 30s my voice and physical body was always ready to rock. All that training and experience from 5-30yo was working for me. I woke up and sang Hi Cs/ I was always warmed-up. I could drive to Ohio and back from a gig (About 18 hours plus 4-5 hours set-up/performance) and jump right back on stage.

Skip ahead to 40. I turned 40 and I went from being in perfect health (seriously despite being overweight all my numbers – sugar, cholesterol, heart rate – went from perfect to crap over night). Losing weight/staying thin becomes harder. I have to warm up like a high school kid that has never sung before.  Because it takes 1-2 days to recover now from a road trip, I am not singing/acting/dancing EVERYDAY. Sure, after 60-90 minutes I can still sound like a wannabe Pavarotti, (in some ways I am better sounds/acting than ever) but it is not easy to get there any more.

But EVERYDAY I focus on my instrument and career. EVERYDAY I vocalize a little bit, even if that just means humming to melt away from congestion from the chords. I’m very sensitive that way.

But before every LIVE performance and EVERY class I teach, I focus myself, warm-up my instrument (Mind, Body, Voice) and prepare to rock.

I hope I can instill this work ethic in all my students. I promise if you have this work ethic you will never go through what Mariah Carey went through on New Years Eve.

However, you can always ignore me, skip learnign how to be a real artist and hope to become a reality star.

BIG CHOICES – BIG VOICES Moving Improv Scenes Forward

BIG CHOICES – BIG VOICES Moving Improv Scenes Forward by discovering your characters’ worlds. BIG CHOICES PDF – download and printable 1-pager

On The Spot

BIG CHOICES – BIG VOICES

When you break it down, Improv becomes a series of choices. After years of training and performance, these choices become second nature. Writers make choices every day as they create new works. Everyone makes choices every day as we navigate life. When you have a conversation with friends, family, co-workers, bosses, enemies… we make choices on the words we speak. We react to our environment. We move forward.

In Improv we start with nothing. So no choice is wrong, as long as it is supporting previous choices in the scene (remember that whole “YES! And…” thing, right?). Unlike life, after a scene ends, the consequences of those choices go away. We have total creative freedom.

So try doing scenes where every statement you make is a new CHOICE that forwards the scene.

WHO

Make a choice about character and relationship. Every scene starts with WHO choices. Some are spoken, some are reflected in our physical performance. Some are inner monologue, never revealed but simply connect us to the scene and strengthen our performance. No choice you make is wrong if you commit to it. After basic choices established about characters/relationship, continue to explore the history of these characters as you move forward in the scene. Don’t sit/stand there and tell us about what happened – BORING. Reveal backstory in the course of the scene.

Improv 4 Teens Comedy Camp in Times Square NYC

Improv 4 Teens Comedy Camp in Times Square NYC

WHERE

Make a choice about setting. Every scene starts with WHERE choices. But continue making WHERE choices throughout the scene. Discover the world in which your characters live. React to stimuli of the five senses. What do you see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. Experience your character’s world the way you experience yours. Again, some are spoken while some choices are revealed through physical performance. And some will be made just to make your character stronger and never noticed by the audience.

From Happy Hour Improv Showcase 2016

WHAT

We need to make things happen. Some Improv is a simple conversation. BORING. The WHAT can be simple reactions to WHO & WHERE choices. Early on make a big choice about the WHAT.  In real life things happen. Even in Seinfeld, a “show about nothing”, things happen. So Make Things Happen. Make a choice, then live with it. Create a conflict. Create a challenge. Create a traumatic event. This is where comedy needs to think more like a drama. The scene will be funny because we are comedians thrust into dramatic situations. But when you play the scene for real you will discover great things about your character, world and situation.

1375804494066

Pat & Nathan react to the world we cannot see, but can imagine thanks to their pantomime and team work.

BIG VOICES

You do not have to scream. BIG VOICES is more about being confident in your choices than volume of voice. The voice is always full, though. Even when our characters are scared or whispering, we need to be heard by all. Unless you have a camera and/or microphone in your face, you need to project those words and choices to the back of the room.

DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN (but never at anyone else’s expense) and “YES! AND…” as you make BIG CHOICES and use BIG VOICES! The more energy you commit, the more focus required… MORE TO COME…
