PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IMPROV COMEDY FOR TEACHERS – NYC DOE VENDOR

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IMPROV COMEDY FOR TEACHERS – NYC DOE VENDOR
We have been presenting 5000+ shows & workshops for K-12 students for nearly 15 years. In that same time we have presented  corporate team building programs for major companies like Louis Vuitton, Coach, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, Home Depot and 100s more. We have a new program that combines both elements into some amazing professional development for teachers. eightimprov@gmail.com

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS – THE FULL PACKAGE

This past spring we were commissioned to do a full package (week of workshops) of Professional Development at PS 346 Brooklyn and I think your school would love the program that included workshops and shows for students.
STEP 1) INTRODUCE PROGRAM TO SCHOOL

STEP 2) IMPROV MASTERCLASS FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF
STEP 3) IN CLASSROOM TRAINING WITH TEACHERS
STEP 4) FOLLOW UP TEACHER/STAFF WORKSHOP

STEP 1) INTRODUCE PROGRAM TO SCHOOL

Introduce Program to entire school via 1-2 shows (depending on school size) – start the school year off with some laughs.
IMPROV 4 KIDS / IMPROV 4 TEENS by EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH is a professional musical comedy show inprovised on the spot based on audience suggestions and participation.
Laughter alone makes school a fun place, lowers stress, blood pressure and more. The shows alone are great cultural arts, language arts and character building programming. Inspire the students and staff at your school to learn more about Improv.

STEP 2) IMPROV MASTERCLASS FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF

This same workshop has been taught to numerous teaching staff as well as corporate teams from many sectors – finance, sales, service, management.
corporate team building
We start with warm-up games that help break down walls of ego and insecurity while building strong communication skills and team bonds. In each game, we focus as we pass energy around a circle. This requires listening and eye contact to follow the flow of the game. When energy is passed to us (via sound, word(s) and/or gesture), we pass it on with projection and diction. We then play a number of performance style games. In each the team has to work together to develop original stories and scenes.
YES AND…
Listen & Respond
Who, Where, What – Story Telling elements
Be in the moment

All of these activities set the creative mind on fire. We engage creative writing and critical thinking. We build a strong sense of community (team communications, listening, respect, eye contact) and further develop leadership skills (Public Speaking, Self Confidence).
psychological_safety
Since 2015, we discuss PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY, the concept proven by a 4 year study at GOOGLE to be the number one reason for why teams succeed. The concept is all about making sure every member on the team feels value. YES AND… – the number one rule in Improv – supports this concept. Society teaches to say NO to just about everything. It is a defense mechanism. It allows us to be mentally/emotionally lazy. But when everyone commits to giving every one a shot, the world changes for all.
We have introduced this concept into our workshops with students as well. Feeling mentally, emotionally and physically safe is imperative to learning. One cannot absorb valuable information when one lives in fear. For many that is simply fear of failure and embarrassment. Many others have real issues with abusive relationships at home and/or school with students, family etc.
We strive to create a psychologically safe space when we teach improv. This has to start with great leadership, demanding all treat others with respect and leading by example.

In order for this to work in your school….

– The Principal and Administration manages teaching and auxiliary staff using great communication skills and creating atmosphere conducive to education and collaboration. Great Managers lead by example. As leaders we are here to serve the needs of our staff making sure they have the tools, resources and support they need to succeed.
– Department heads continue that mentality and lead team meetings and development
– Teachers are the team leaders of their classrooms. Psychological Safety and Performance drive put students in the learning zone.
5traits

STEP 3) IN CLASSROOM TRAINING WITH TEACHERS

Our teachers go into every classroom to show your teachers how to use the games and teach the students some valuable life skills. We teach how to teach improv. With your teachers, our staff leads a number of games that warm-up the body and mind and team. All of these games focus on good communication – listening, eye contact, projection and diction. The games are so fun the shyest in the crowd will surprise you. The kids think they are just having fun, learning about comedy. the real goals are far more reaching.
Students not afraid to participate, participate more often and engage in their studies. The learn to listen and absorb concepts for life, rather than cram some information for the next test.
comedykids

STEP 4) FOLLOW UP PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS

We come together, review some games, learn a few more and discuss how to empower your staff, using improve games to help build morale, reduce stress before big tests and lectures, and develop better presentation skills. Also we encourage using Improv to role play characters form fiction and history, science etc.

GAME NIGHT – Minute to Win It and more for Corporate Team Building

THIS WEEK I am running two GAME NIGHT events for two different NYC firms. ONE we are hosting at our Times Square theater with Happy Hour menu (Includes drink with a mini buffet of sliders, wings, chips and dips – hummus, guacamole, salsa etc). Here are some of the planned events – most inspired by TV’s Minute to Win It and other Game Shows….

Minute-to-Win-It

PICTIONARY:

For each round, teams send a one player to draw clues as the rest of the team tries to guess. Requires a large drawing pad and easel or wall mount.

FAMILY FEUD:

Teams face off to see how well they know trivia and common knowledge

COOKIE FACE:

This is a great game to kick off the party because all of the players can compete at the same time (or you can break it down into several rounds of game play). Each player places a cookie on their forehead, and the goal is to get the cookie into your mouth using only your facial muscles in under 1 minute. No hands! This is tougher than it looks!

THIS BLOWS:

Using a balloon full of air, contestant tries to knock off all of the cups on a table, only using the force of the balloons air.

STACK ATTACK:

Players have to stack up a pile of cups and then place them back into a single stack in under a minute. The original Minute to Win It version of this game calls for 36 cups to be stacked, but we reduced the number of cups for the children. Each child stacked 21 cups, and we discovered that this was the perfect number that resulted in exactly half of the kids being successful. Challenging, but not too challenging! Two players competing in each round works well so that any falling cups won’t knock over your competitor’s stack, too!

SUCK IT UP:

Players place a straw in their mouth and use suction to transfer a pile of 25 M&M’s from one plate to another in under one minute. Only one hand may be used to hold the straw. Everyone gets to eat their candy when the round is finished!  This game also works well with 3 players competing in each round.

RAPID FIRE:

Using a rubber band, contestant

SCOOP IT UP:

Using nothing but a spoon in your mouth, transfer six ping pong balls from one bowl to another) in less than one minute. No hands! Hands are only allowed if you drop the ping pong ball, and then they can be used to place the ball back into the original bowl for another transfer attempt. 2-3 players compete for each round of play.

SPUDNICK:

Contestant inserts 5 straws into a potato, then balance a chocolate covered  peanut candy on top of each straw.

MOVIN’ ON UP:

Each player starts with a stack of 25 red cups with one blue cup at the top of the stack. Start by moving the top blue cup to the bottom of the stack, and continue moving cups from the top to the bottom until the blue cup is back at the bottom of the stack again. Again, we modified this from the original adult version of the game that calls for 40 cups, and found that 26 cups was a great amount for the kids to work with. 2-3 children per round of competition works well.

NUTSTACKER:

Thread five hex nuts onto a wooden skewer. Using only one hand on the skewer, stack up all of the nuts in under one minute. Since this game requires the table to stay as still as possible, only two players compete per round.

JUNK IN THE TRUNK:

This game was another crowd favorite! To prepare for this game, empty a tissue box, and use an Xacto knife to make two slits into the bottom of the box. Thread an adjustable belt or wide ribbon through the two slits to create a tissue-box-on-a-belt. Removing the thin plastic barrier from the tissue box opening will make game play easier (for younger children) or keep it intact for more challenging play.

To play the game, strap the tissue box onto the player’s back, and fill it with 6-8 ping pong balls (we used 6, but 8 would be appropriate for older children and adults). Shake, shimmy, jump, and dance around until all of the balls have fallen out of the tissue box. No using your hands and no laying down! This game is hysterical to watch in action!

DEFY GRAVITY:

Using only one hand, players must keep two balloons from touching the ground for one minute. For a more challenging game, increase the amount to three balloons per player (and use different colored balloons for each player to make it easy to differentiate!). No holding the balloons!  2 players per round of competition worked well to give the players ample space to knock their balloons around.

MAD DOG:

Attach two TIC TAC boxes to either side
