Let’s Begin, Let’s Play

We start with a brief introduction to our Improv.

1. Our #1 Rule: HAVE FUN but never at another’s expense! Here we generate laughs together.
2. Improv #1 Rule: YES AND! Accept & Support everyone on the team, our job the next 2 hours is to make everyone else look great. We don’t have to worry about ourselves, because everyone else has our back! We create a safe space for all. Psychological Safety is the #1 factor in team success.
3. Improv #1 Skill: LISTENING! Listen with your eyes; listen with the willingness to change. Listening is the #1 factor in great leadership.

Now let’s have fun!

We start standing together in a large circle playing a few ice breakers. These games develop both individual and team focus. When it is our turn we simply take the energy and pass it along, via a sound, gesture, word, etc. The rest of the time we follow the energy around the circle, listening with our eyes.

On paper these games sound silly, and they are in many ways. The team starts laughing, letting go, loosening up a bit. Meanwhile we realize, even with simple sounds and gestures, we require a certain focus to clearly communicate our intent.

For the entire session we play one game after another that require individuals to both lead and follow, in a constant give and take, listening and responding. The team comes together to play. We learn that making simple choices is best. Don’t TRY to be funny or clever. Never TRY to be perfect. Don’t think, meaning, looking back in the head for answers. That’s where we find writer’s block, ego and insecurity. Instead we learn to trust our instincts and out team.

Throughout we discuss what makes good comedy. HAVE FUN but never at another’s expense. In Improv we play the long games. BAD JOKES that make folks uncomfortable in the office are not welcome here. We create a space where ALL can laugh, together.
