In the fast-paced world of improv and theater, particularly here at the New York Improv Theater, it’s not enough to simply “focus.” As actors, we must constantly be vigilant, catching ourselves the moment we become unfocused and pulled out of the present scene. When we lose focus, even for a fleeting second, our audience loses focus too.
The Empathy Superpower
Few people truly tap into their empathy as a superpower, but we all possess empathic qualities. We subconsciously pick up on nonverbal cues, sensing when someone is not fully present or sincere. This is why leading by example is so crucial, especially for improvisers and actors. Our superpower lies in our ability to empathize with our characters and the situations they find themselves in. However, every time we drop that focus, we lose our audience’s focus as well.
The Perils of Thinking On Stage
When I call out colleagues for appearing checked out on stage, they rarely realize it unless I show them the video. More often than not, these seasoned professionals appear disconnected because they’re busy thinking of something funny to say. This is a common pitfall, even for the most experienced improvisers.
The Power of Staying Present
This is why I always teach my students to “NEVER THINK!!!” Instead, stay focused, listen with your eyes, and you’ll never have to think before you speak. When we’re fully present in the moment, truly listening and reacting to our scene partners, the words and actions flow naturally.
Focusing Techniques for Actors
- Mindfulness Meditation: Regularly practicing mindfulness meditation can help you develop greater awareness of your thoughts and feelings, making it easier to catch yourself when you start to drift off.
- Physical Warm-ups: Engaging in physical warm-ups before performances can help you ground yourself in your body and be more present in the moment.
- Active Listening: Make a conscious effort to truly listen to your scene partners, paying attention not only to their words but also to their nonverbal cues.
- Eye Contact: Maintaining eye contact with your scene partners can help you stay connected and engaged in the scene.
- Breathing Exercises: Simple breathing exercises can help you calm your mind and focus your attention.
Remember, as actors, our job is to transport our audience to another world. We can only do this if we’re fully present and engaged in the moment. So next time you’re on stage, remember to focus, listen, and never think!
