SIX Japanese Techniques to Overcome Laziness: Powerful Life Plan

I just stumbled across this video promoting these six steps. Four of the six amazing align with what I teach in Improv comedy. I think I need to adopt the other two, regarding time management and mindful eating.

  1. Kaizen (改善): The Power of Small Steps
  • Meaning: “Continuous improvement” or “change for the better”.
  • Application: Instead of focusing on big, overwhelming goals, break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. This makes it easier to get started and builds momentum over time.
  • Example: If you want to start exercising, start with a 10-minute walk instead of aiming for an hour-long workout right away.
  1. Ikigai (生き甲斐): Finding Your Purpose
  • Meaning: Your “reason for being” – something that gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
  • Application: When you have a strong sense of purpose, it’s easier to overcome laziness because you’re motivated by something bigger than yourself.
  • Tip: Explore different activities and interests to discover what truly excites you and makes you feel alive.
  1. Pomodoro Technique: Time Management Made Simple
  • Meaning: Named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer, this technique involves breaking work into intervals.
  • Application: Work for 25 minutes without distractions, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle a few times, then take a longer break. This helps maintain focus and prevents burnout.
  1. Hara Hachi Bu (腹八分目): Mindful Eating
  • Meaning: “Eat until you’re 80% full.”
  • Application: Overeating can lead to sluggishness and fatigue, making it harder to overcome laziness. By practicing mindful eating and stopping before you’re completely full, you’ll feel lighter and more energized.
  1. Shoshin (初心): The Beginner’s Mind
  • Meaning: Approaching everything with an open and curious mind, just like a beginner.
  • Application: When you let go of preconceived notions and expectations, you’re more likely to see things from a fresh perspective and find new solutions to overcome challenges.
  1. Wabi-Sabi (侘寂): Embracing Imperfection
  • Meaning: Finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity.
  • Application: Instead of striving for unattainable perfection, accept that things will not always go according to plan. Focus on progress, not perfection, and appreciate the beauty in the journey.

Remember: These techniques are not quick fixes for laziness. They require consistent effort and practice. But by incorporating them into your daily life, you can gradually overcome laziness and achieve your goals.
