The “1-5-6-4” Chord Progression: A Musical Staple, Musical Improv Applications

The “1-5-6-4” chord progression is a cornerstone of popular music, weaving its way through countless hits across various genres. This seemingly simple pattern holds the power to evoke a wide range of emotions, from joy and hope to yearning and melancholy. Let’s explore the structure of this progression and how it’s been used to create some of the most memorable songs in pop music history.

In the Key of D major, U2 has the most simple base line of repeated notes that are the perfect teaching tool to learn the 1 – 5 – 6 – 4 pattern. You might also see I – V – VI – IV listed in places.

Understanding the Structure

The “1-5-6-4” progression is built upon the diatonic scale, a fundamental element of Western music theory. Here’s a breakdown of what those numbers represent:

  • 1: The tonic chord, the home base of the key and the ultimate resolution point.
  • 5: The dominant chord, creating tension and anticipation that naturally resolves to the tonic.
  • 6: The submediant chord, often adding a touch of sweetness or sadness.
  • 4: The subdominant chord, acting as a pre-dominant, leading back to the dominant (5) and eventually the tonic (1).

This cyclical movement creates a satisfying musical journey, with the tension and release providing an emotional backbone for the melody and lyrics.

MUSICAL IMPROV COMEDY over 1 – 5 – 6 – 4

This chord pattern allows a number of options for a musician and improv players. Vary the tempo and style. For as traditional A – A – B – B rhyme scheme, you might play the pattern once, twice or four times to get a four line verse.

I love playing the pattern twice, so every two bars is a line. Lines one and three over the ONE and FIVE chords (C & G in the key of C above) propose a question. Lines two and four can answer the question and perhaps rhyme with the previous line over the SIX and FOUR chords (A minor and F major in the key of C)
