Discover Your Inner Comic: A Week of Improv & Stand-Up!
Ready to find your funny? Our immersive weekly comedy camp is your stage! Every day, you’ll dive into the world of improv comedy and craft original stand-up routines, all culminating in a live performance showcase each Friday.
The Philosophy: Fun, Support, and “Yes, And…”
At the heart of our camp is Walt Frasier’s #1 Rule: HAVE FUN, but never at another’s expense! This means we foster a supportive and inclusive environment where laughter thrives responsibly. Our improv training emphasizes the power of “YES AND…” – the core principle of accepting and building upon ideas. It’s about empowering your teammates and making everyone look amazing.
We also believe that LISTENING is the #1 Skill in Comedy. You’ll learn to listen with your eyes and with a willingness to change, focusing on the moment and making simple choices that support your team.
What Your Week Looks Like:
Each week is a self-contained session, perfect for both beginners and those looking to refine their skills.
Monday – Thursday: From Classes to Rehearsals
- 8:45 AM – 9:30 AM: Morning Drop-Off & Stage Time: Start your day with flexible time to practice stand-up, sketch, or improv on stage, moderated by our teen counselors. Or, use this time to journal and gather your thoughts.
- 9:30 AM: Morning Improv Masterclass: We kick off every day with a brief roll call, a “wisdom of the day” or comedy writing exercise, followed by improv warm-ups and a performance masterclass. You’ll learn new games and revisit class favorites.
- 11:45 AM: Lunch Break
- 1:00 PM: Open Mic – Stand-Up Development: Transform your personal stories, observations, and experiences into original stand-up comedy routines in a supportive open-mic setting.
- 2:00 PM: Show Rehearsal: Get more stage time playing games that will be featured in the Friday showcase, honing your performance skills.
- 3:00 PM: Afternoon Activity: Enjoy a pro show performed by our teachers and cast from EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH Improv, engage in team-bonding games, or explore other fun activities.
Fridays: Showcase Your Talent!
- 8:45 AM: Drop-Offs
- 9:30 AM: Warm-Up & Mock Show
- 12:00 PM: Lunch Break & Notes
- 2:00 PM: The Friday Showcase! This is your moment to shine! Students who’ve completed the full week of camp will perform their developed routines and improv skills for an audience. Campers are dismissed after the show.
Beyond the Classroom: Daily “Homework” for Comedians
Your comedic journey continues beyond camp hours with these simple, yet powerful practices:
- SMILE: Start every day with a smile! It’s a powerful tool for feeling good and eliciting positive responses from others. Lead by example!
- EXPERIENCE and OBSERVE YOUR WORLD: Every bit of comedy gold is right in front of you. Live with wide-open eyes and ears. From school to the subway, the park to the store – pay attention to what happens to you and around you.
- RECORD YOUR WORLD: Keep a journal! Write down everything you observe and experience. Describe every improv game in your own words, and after each performance, reflect on the experience. Getting thoughts out of your head frees you to focus in the moment.
