Four Square
Staging:
This game for four players starts with performers standing in a square, two downstage, two upstage. At times, especially for private events, we will use an audience volunteer in the fourth position.
Sample MC Set Up:
- For this game, we need four scene titles/suggestions. Possible options could be location, job, relationship, historical event/era, etc. Every time I yell ROTATE, the players will rotate scenes.
Game Play:
Four Square creates four distinct scenes presented in rotation. Standing in a square, the downstage pair of players performs their scene until MC yells ROTATE. Each scene has its own WHO (characters/relationship) WHERE (location) WHAT (plot, arc).
After all four scenes are introduced, we return to scene one. It could be right where you left off, five minutes later or even fifty years later. Rotate through each scene three times. ( You could have 2 or more than three, but THREE is the magic number in comedy). Usually the first round lets each scene run 30-45 seconds, then shorter and shorter for rounds two and three (Sometimes a single punch line/wrap up line for third round).
