Theater kids are usually eager to jump into improv, but non-theater students, especially middle schoolers, can be more reluctant. The key is to make it fun and accessible. Here’s how we do it at New York Improv Theater:
- Call it Comedy: We frame improv as comedy, something relatable and engaging that everyone enjoys.
- Performance-Based Games: We kick off with games that feel like mini-performances, giving students a taste of the spotlight and a chance to get laughs.

These are the guiding principles for all our classes:
- Have Fun: The most important rule! But remember, never at someone else’s expense.
- Yes, And…: The golden rule of improv. Accept and build upon every offer.
- Listening: The foundation of comedy and connection. Listen actively to your scene partners.
Jump Right In: Games and Exercises
We dive into action-packed games like Stop/Walk/Zip Zap Zup, Emotional Carpool, and Three-Headed Expert. These games get students moving, laughing, and collaborating. We also introduce foundational improv concepts like “I Am a Tree,” which emphasizes character, setting, and action.
The Power of Voices
We often conclude with a challenging game called Voices. It’s a true test of teamwork, focus, and resilience. Even beginners can surprise themselves with what they can achieve in this game.
