The Art of Observation

Artists don’t just see a green leaf; they see layers of colors, shadows, highlights, contours, and textures. As comedians and actors, we have to truly open our eyes, ears — in fact, engage ALL our senses — and observe our world to translate it into stories on stage or in front of the camera.

Comics discover new things daily. We live. And then we talk about it.

Actors delve into the psychology of human behavior. We watch people as if in a study. Why is that person angry, sad, excited? Why do they express themselves in a certain way? We rarely reveal all of this discovery in words, but we use this knowledge to create layers in the simplest of looks as our characters react to the world.

Writers observe their world and put the nuance of life — the good, the bad, the ugly — into their stories.

Embracing the Unknown

Don’t let the fear of the unknown stifle your process, as artists or otherwise. People get stuck in less-than-desirable situations, fearing the unknown, when their happiness is probably right around the corner.
