Reflecting on my recent workshop with New York City school principals, and the insightful discussions on my latest podcast guest appearance, one powerful message consistently emerges: We must lead by example.
It’s a challenge I see daily, working with diverse audiences, from 5-year-olds to seasoned corporate leaders. The perception can sometimes differ from the intent, as when I sensed my message was perceived as scolding during the principals’ workshop. But my passion is truly to empower everyone to succeed.
We must become “human skills ninjas,” not by abandoning technology, but by mastering core skills. It requires self-discipline and self-awareness, continuously “catching ourselves” when we fall short—like catching myself with my diet, or realizing I’ve been distracted.
We expect our students to focus and participate; therefore, we must model that behavior. Don’t give away your power by doubting your effectiveness. Whether you’re theatrical or not, your ability to lead by example is key, and that is the next level. When you catch yourself, double down on your focus, and inspire your students to do the same.
