Every day I tell acting /comedy students
- Listen, Don’t Think. When you listen and focus yourself NEVER have to think.
- DON’T TRY TO BE FUNNY! DON’T TRY TO BE CLEVER
- Don’t try to be great today. Be the best you can be at this moment. And strive to be 1% better tomorrow.
- And by all means remove ego and insecurity from the equation. After every show, analyze the work without celebration or beating yourself up. Identify the good, the bad, the ugly. Then simply repeat successes, and learn from mistakes.
- As long as you never give up on yourself, there is no failure.
And then I see this clip from Roger Federer… He has won nearly 80% of all his matches by winning 54% of every point. If he double faults, that’s just one point for.his opponent. If he hits and ace, that’s just one point for him.
Maria Callas used to say only amateurs never crack.
When you sing a song, if you hit a bad note, who cares. Worrying about 1 note will ruin a dozen others. Worrying about a high note coming up leads to tightening of the throat and dry mouth.
In Nessun Dorma, if you over sing the G (the second VINCERO), you will not hit the B, the note folks pay te big bucks to hear.
Amateurs, or poorly trained singers, will often worry about every note be perfect. As a result, they tighten. They develop nodes. They lose steam. They rarely truly find that sweetness in the voice.
Athletes worried about injury are more likely to get hurt because they are tight.
Listen. Focus. Prepare. Research. But when it is time to execute, remember my #1 rule…
HAVE FUN!
