Primary Focus: Focus, Rhythm, and Quick Adaptation.
Game Overview
1, 2, 3 is a surprisingly fun and simple circle or paired warm-up game where two people face each other and count to three, alternating who starts the count. The exercise improves focus, rhythm, and quick adaptation to changing rules.
Setup
- Players: Pairs of actors (can be played simultaneously across a larger ensemble).
- Materials: None.
- The Ask: Partners stand face-to-face, maintaining clear eye contact.
How to Play
- The Base Count: Partners establish a steady rhythm by alternating numbers to count to three continuously (e.g., Player 1 says “1,” Player 2 says “2,” Player 1 says “3,” Player 2 says “1,” and so on).
- The First Substitution: Once the base count is steady, the facilitator introduces a rule change. Players must replace the number “2” with a specific physical action, such as a physical clap, while still speaking “1” and “3” aloud.
- The Second Substitution: After adjusting to the first change, the rule updates again. Players must keep the clap for “2” and now replace the number “3” with a different action, such as a jump, leaving only the number “1” spoken aloud.
- The Progression: The cycle continues at a steady pace, testing the pairs’ coordination as more spoken numbers are systematically removed or substituted.
Execution Notes
- Maintain the Pulse: The priority of the drill is to maintain a constant, shared rhythm between partners. Speed is less important than consistency.
- Lean Into Mistakes: When a player slips up or speaks a replaced number, the tension breaks. Players should instantly celebrate the mistake, reset the count, and seamlessly drop back into the rhythm without stalling.
- Physical Economy: Ensure the non-verbal movements (like the claps or jumps) are distinct and intentional so your partner can easily read and adapt to the physical sequence.
Technical Variations
| Variation | Description |
| The Sound Swap | Instead of physical actions, numbers are replaced with distinct vocal sound effects or gibberish words. |
| The Sound and Movement Combo | Replaced numbers require both a specific sound effect and a synchronized physical action executed simultaneously. |
| The Category Count | Instead of numbers or actions, players alternate naming items in a specific fast-paced category (e.g., fruits, actors) on the beats of 1, 2, and 3. |
