Primary Focus: Active Listening, Empathy, and Group Bonding.
Game Overview
1 Minute Life Stories is a paired icebreaker and listening drill that challenges participants to practice uninterrupted focus and precise memory recall. By separating the act of listening from the urge to respond, the exercise highlights the difference between casual hearing and active engagement, while helping ensemble members build immediate personal connections.
Setup
Players: Pairs of actors.
Materials: A stopwatch or timer (managed by the facilitator).
The Ask: None (players share their actual or slightly dramatized personal histories).
How to Play
The Monologue: Player 1 is given exactly one minute to share their life story. They must speak continuously without stopping.
The Active Listener: Player 2 must listen in total silence. They cannot interrupt, ask questions, or offer verbal commentary; their focus is entirely on absorbing the details.
The Mirror Recall: Once the minute is up, Player 2 is given a time block to repeat back as much of Player 1’s story as they can remember, focusing on accuracy and validating the details shared.
The Switch: The partners swap roles, and Player 2 shares their life story for one minute while Player 1 listens actively.
Execution Notes
Listen to Remember, Not to Reply: The core pedagogical purpose of this exercise is to break the habit of planning what to say next while a scene partner is speaking.
Embrace the Silence: For the listening player, non-verbal feedback (nodding, eye contact, open posture) is critical to supporting the speaker without breaking the “no interruption” constraint.
Accuracy Over Flair: When repeating the story back, the listener should strive to honor the speaker’s facts rather than summarizing or turning it into a joke.
