Primary Focus: Physical Observation, Mirroring, and Energy Transformation.
Game Overview
Aerobics is a high-energy movement and observation exercise designed to build physical alignment and break down self-consciousness within an ensemble. Operating like a mobile, sequential mirror game, players pass physical quirks, gaits, and tempos down a moving line, challenging everyone to hyper-focus on their partner’s physical nuances while unhesitatingly committing to the transformation.
Setup
- Players: Full ensemble (6–15 players).
- Materials: None.
- The Ask: The entire group forms a single-file line along the perimeter of the performance space.
How to Play
- The Lead Walk: Player 1 begins walking around the room in a massive circle, establishing a highly distinct, unique physical gait, posture, speed, or mannerism (e.g., exaggerated arm swings, limping, strutting, heavy stomping).
- The Shadow Follow: Player 2 trails right behind Player 1, acting as an exact physical shadow by observing and meticulously imitating every nuance of Player 1’s movement.
- The Rest of the Line: The remaining players in the single-file line follow the path around the space at a distance, observing the physical interaction but walking normally until it is their turn to track the person in front of them.
- The Rotation: After a few laps around the room, the facilitator shouts “Rotate!” (or Player 1 naturally breaks away). Player 1 cycles directly to the very back of the global line.
- The Mutation: Player 2 now assumes the absolute lead position, strictly maintaining the physical style they just learned. Player 3 instantly steps up to shadow and imitate Player 2. The process repeats down the line.
Execution Notes
- Don’t Dilute the Choice: When you inherit the lead position, work hard to maintain the full weight, energy, and precision of the original movement choices passed to you rather than slipping back into your normal walk.
- Catch the Subtle Details: Observation isn’t just about big gestures. Watch your partner’s head tilt, hand placement, shoulder tension, and stride length to capture a holistic physical profile.
- Support the Pulse: The line must keep a continuous, forward-moving pace around the room to prevent lagging or stalling during the player transitions.
Technical Variations
| Variation | Description |
| Vocal Aerobics | In addition to matching the physical gait, the leader introduces a rhythmic sound effect, sigh, grunt, or nonsense syllable on every third step, which the follower must mirror precisely. |
| Emotional Filter | The leader establishes an unspoken core emotion (e.g., overwhelming grief, extreme paranoia, ecstatic joy) through their physical walk, which must be fully embodied and absorbed by the shadow tracker. |
| The Telephone Wave | Instead of waiting for a formal rotation, the movement choice of the front leader is passed backward through the active line simultaneously, morphing organically by the time it hits the final player. |
