Audition Advice Every Actor Needs to Hear

  • Treat every class/rehearsal as a performance
  • Treat every performance as a class/rehearsal
  • Treat every Audition like another performance

For years I saw auditions, especially auditions for agents and casting directors as a gateway to acting. I treated the industry with disdain. I didn’t respect the audition room.

At some point I started approaching every audition like a performance.

I stopped memorizing lines just in time. I really started making real choices. I discovered who the characters are. I truly prepared.

In school, you spend most of your time studying another’s interpretation of a character. The heavy lifting has been done for you.

At auditions, your directors are often your teachers. They know what you can do. So if you blow the try out, you can still nail the part.

When I first started auditioning I was all in for musicals. My voice was strong and pretty enough, dramatic enough. I could butcher an audition and still show I had what it took…. for dinner theater and non equity tours.

Two things happened.

  • My ego exploded
  • I got lazy

Out of arrogance, I thought, my voice is good enough, who cares if I butcher the words.

This happened when I made the NYC move.

Suddenly, I stopped working. Suddenly ego turned to insecurity.

Eventually I created my own work, performing and teaching improv. Thankfully, I’ve been a working actor, wo a day job, since 2005.

Now, at age 48, it’s been 25+ years since my first real paying gig, playing Samuel in Pirates of Penzance for 20 weeks at the West End Dinner Theater, just outside DC.

The above advice is 💯 my deduction of making a lot of mistakes, course correcting, finally getting it right a few times, at least enough to get a few costar gigs on TV.

The advice also coems after years of watching from the other side, as hundreds have auditioned for me.

The improv training is where I found the true confidence to be myself.

The real trick?

There are no tricks.

Respect the audition as if it is the performance. Be prepared. REALLY prepared.

Prepare yourself

Breath. Stretch. Warm up your body, mind and soul they way you would before an intense class or show. Do what you have been trained to do.

Prepare your material

Don’t just memorize line, LEARN the material. Make choices.

Focus

Close your eyes and SEE the characters world, the way a great improviser sees the world unfolding in a scene. Your imagination creates a pseudo hologram of the world. Don’t let the coldness of an audition studio or the comfort of your own home doing a self tape distract you. Go to the world this character lives.

For theater make those big bold choices.

For TV/Film, unless the show/style calls for otherwise, drop all pretense and just say the words (but do ALL that other work first so your inner monologue is on point)

On the outside less is more.

On the inside, you are a fiery inferno of energy creating something out of nothing.

ALL this starts on day one of your first acting class. This blog is not for the “actor” looking for tricks. This is for my newest students, or the ones getting lazy in their teen years (lol). The more you know as an artist, the harder the work gets, not easier.

No artist should rest on past achievements. I don’t care if your Tom Hanks, to keep putting out great requires great work now.

Be a sponge!!!!

Listen to every word. You don’t know what you don’t know. You may not get what I wrote above but someday it will click, if you don’t give up on yourself.

When the time comes, if you did the work, and get your ego and insecurity out of your character’s way, instinct will kick in and you rock.

You may not get the part, but you’ll make the impression that gets the next audition. This audition is an artistic experience, not a gateway to art. Treat it with the respect it deserves and eventually the numbers game will work in your favor.

PS

I am so proud of my students. I am so overjoyed I needed to write this post for them.

“Try a Little Tenderness” is a song written by Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly and Harry M. Woods. It was first recorded on December 8, 1932, by the Ray Noble Orchestra (with vocals by Val Rosing). Both Ruth Etting and Bing Crosby recorded it in 1933.

A popular version in an entirely new form was recorded by soul artist Otis Redding in 1966. Redding was backed on his version by Booker T. & the M.G.’s, and Stax staff producer Isaac Hayes worked on the arrangement. Redding’s recording features a slow, soulful opening that eventually builds into a frenetic R&B conclusion, incorporating elements from the Duke Ellington–Lee Gaines song “Just Squeeze Me (But Please Don’t Tease Me)” as well as the words “Sock it to me”. This version peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has been named on a number of “best songs of all time” lists, including those from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It is in the 204th position on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. A live version performed in 1967 at the Monterey International Pop Festival was also recorded. This version was heavily influential in the 1991 cult Irish movie The Commitments, at one point the band performing the song in the style of Otis Redding.

Sing along with the lyrics…

Oh she may be weary
Them young girls they do get wearied
Wearing that same old shaggy dress, yeah yeah
But when she gets weary
Try a little tenderness, yeah yeah

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating
The thing that you’ll never, never, never, never possess
Yeah, yeah
But while she’s there waiting
Without them try a little tenderness
That’s all you got to do

It’s not just sentimental no, no, no
She has her griefs and care, yeah yeah yeah
But the soft words they are spoke so gentle, yeah
It makes it easier, easier to bear, yeah

You won’t regret it no, no
Young girls they don’t forget it
Love is their whole happiness, yeah yeah yeah
But its all so easy
You got to do is try
Try a little tenderness…

THE RAIN SONG
Words & Music by David Duchovny

PEOPLE JUST KEEP MOVIN’ AROUND
TRYIN’ TO FIND A PLACE IN THE SUN
LAYIN’ THEIR TOWELS AND THEIR TROUBLES DOWN
WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE THE DAY’S TOO LONG
NOWHERE TO HIDE NOWHERE YOU BELONG
PUT YOUR HAND OUT FEEL THE HEAVENS COME DOWN TO YOU
LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED THAT’S WHAT THE BOOK OF JOHN TAUGHT YOU

BUT YOU WANNA SEE CLOUDS ABOVE
AND I KNOW THAT BETTER THAN ANYONE
BECAUSE MY DARLING, IT’S THE RAIN YOU LOVE
IT’LL ALWAYS BE RAINING IN THIS SONG

YEARS FROM NOW WHEN YOU’RE OLD AND GREY
STORIES OF YOUR BEAUTY JUST EMPTY HEARSAY
THE WAY I LOOK AT YOU WILL MAKE YOU YOUNG AGAIN
THESE HUMBLE CHORDS WILL GATHER CLOUDS ABOVE
MY WORDS WILL SEED THOSE CLOUDS WITH LOVE
OUR MEMORIES WILL RING SWEETNESS ‘ROUND THE PAIN
A FISTFUL OF LOVE IN A BOX OF RAIN

BABY, BABY NOW IT WON’T BE LONG
IF YOU’RE FEELING DOWN AND PUT UPON
NOTHING THIS STRONG COULD EVER BE WRONG
IT’S ALWAYS RAINING IN THIS SONG

NOW BABY I’M NOT A METEOROLOGIST
OR AN ARMCHAIR ASTROLOGIST
BUT I DON’T NEED NO WEATHERMAN
TO TELL ME WHEN TO TAKE A STAND

NOW BABY, BABY AS THE HEAVENS DESCEND
YOU AND I WILL SAY AMEN
THIS OLD COLD FRONT WILL MOVE ALONG
BABY, BABY AS THE HEAVENS DESCEND
YOU AND I WILL MAKE AMENDS
MEET ME BACK HERE WHERE YOU BELONG

IT’S ALWAYS RAINING
IT’S ALWAYS RAINING
IT’S ALWAYS RAINING IN THIS SONG

THE THINGS
words and music
by David Duchovny

THE THINGS YOU SAID WERE NOT UNTRUE
THE THINGS YOU WORE WERE OKAY TOO
THE THINGS YOU KEPT THE THINGS YOU THREW AWAY
THE THINGS YOU THOUGHT I NEVER KNEW WILL STAY

THE LOVE I SHOWED WAS PARTLY COLD
THE THINGS I SAID WERE MOSTLY TRUE
THE THINGS YOU DID WERE PARTLY KNOWN
THE DREAMS I HAVE WILL GO UNTOLD, YEAH

THEY SAY WHAT FATE DEALS, TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS
WELL TELL THAT TO MY HEART THAT BLEEDS
CAUSE IF THE HANDS OF FATE AND TIME WERE TRULY BY MY SIDE
I COULD LOOK AT YOU TODAY WITHOUT CRYING

THE THING I WAS TO YOU WAS GONE
THE THING YOU WERE TO ME WAS BLUE
THE THING I WANTED TO UNFOLD AND TURN
MAKE PAPER TIGERS INTO GOLD OR BURN

THEY SAY WHAT FATE DEALS, TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS
WELL TELL THAT TO MY HEART THAT BLEEDS
‘CAUSE IF THE HANDS OF FATE AND TIME WERE TRULY BY MY SIDE
I COULD LOOK AT YOU TODAY WITHOUT DYING

THE THINGS WE SAID WE’D NEVER SAY
IF THINGS GET TOUGH WE’LL SAY THEM ANYWAY

We always recommend pairing with a show. But for smaller groups we can do a workshop by itself. We try to keep class size down so we provide a teacher for every 20-30 students.

With younger students we focus on listening and following directions. We impress the importance of eye contact and respect.

For grades 3 and up we start to focus on public speaking and more advance story telling techniques. We have heard stories from students and teachers that, having completed our basic workshops – students have been inspired to start their own clubs and teams at school, furthering their development. Many teachers have reported using our games in class to teach literature and even role play historical figures or just wake up and get ready to learn.

CORE CURRICULUM

When we first performing in 2002, education was the farthest from our vision. But ever since 2003, when Farmington, CT school asked us to perform for their four K-5 schools, we have realized and developed the educational program that exists today. Our entire program is built upon working with schools for the past 12 years, constantly upgrading the program based on teacher and administration feedback. Since 2003 we have performed well over 4000 shows for K-12 audiences via out Times Square theater and touring nationwide.

CULTURAL ARTS

Our Improv Shows –disguised as modern comedies – introduce students to classic theater and music. Shows open with a mock Madrigal and close with a Jazzy & Rocking blues number. Depending on time we also include Jigs, Opera and Spoken Word. The entire show is theater and we include classic literature, Shakespeare and more. The cast creates original skits and songs based on audience suggestions and participation, bringing classic and original characters to life. But disguised as “comedy” we reach a far greater audience than the traditional “theater” or “music” presentations.

Beyond the education, students, teachers and parents equally love the entertainment. The break from the stress of the classroom refreshes all. SEE “WHY IMPROV” SECTION BELOW

LANGUAGE ARTS

The shows, workshops and residencies all focus on story telling – creating original characters, scenes and action. Even as a young honors student I hated “analyzing” literature (books or plays) until I studied Shakespeare as an actor. All of the sudden, the WHY became important to me. Similarly we address elements of plot and story from a practical application. We awaken imaginations, teach how to brainstorm, require good grammar and speech. And we teach simple warm-up, technique and performance games that can be recreated in the your class rooms. Now, in regular English Language Arts classes understanding an author’s intent is less of an academic exercise and more of a fun self-enrichment that students welcome.

CHARACTER BUILDING

We have great study guides that tie in our messages of team to Anti-Bully themes. The workshops both serve to teach team skills that deter bully and other disrespectful behavior AND build self-respecting, self-confident individuals better equip to handle bully behavior from others. Even in our workshops for adults, we find fear of making eye contact and public speaking one of the biggest obstacles to success. It is our contention that most “character” issues stem from insecurity. Building self confidence and self respect both work to reduce behaviors of bullies and victims. As a result we build a strong community. And in our longer programs/residencies, we build leaders.

OVERVIEW OF OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Our shows are the coolest way to inspire…
Our workshops are the coolest way to introduce…
Our residencies are the coolest way to develop…
Our Professional Development helps your staff build the future…

CREATIVITY – CUMMUNITY – LEADERSHIP

In addition to being great a cultural arts experience, Improv shows, workshops and residencies are the coolest way to get students excited about and teach creativity (writing and thinking), community (team, communications, listening, respect), and leadership (public speaking, self-confidence, self respect, eye contact, focus).

SHOWS

Our cast presents original music and skits created on the spot based on audience suggestions and participation. The shows are so much fun, the students don’t even realize the valuable skills they are learning. Our study guides help teachers prepare students before and follow up with important concepts following the program.

WORKSHOPS

45-60 minutes of fun playing team building and storytelling games that warm up the mind and body to create and work together. These workshops get the students on their feet developing exposition (WHO & WHERE) and rising action (WHAT) for original stories. Students are asked to project and speak clearly so the whole class can hear. YES AND is the main focus, supporting your teammates.

RESIDENCIES / Weekly Classes

Great afterschool, activity period, weekends OR as Unit within English Elective (Theater, Creative Writing, Film, etc). 10-20 hour programs prepare a group of students to perform their own show, diving much deeper into performing and creative concepts. Each session begins with warm-up and team activities. Students learn 5-10 classic games for performance. Students also share life stories that we develop into comedy monologues. Our teachers tie in everything we do to writing reports and other activities for classes.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT for TEACHERS

Our Improv Workshops for teachers serve a dual purpose. Team building for your staff AND providing teachers valuable tools to continue the work we begin. A team that
enjoys working together gets things done! We presented a workshop years ago at Preparatory Academy for Writers in Springfield Gardens. At a luncheon after the workshops, the principal pulled us aside and said, “See those two. They hated each other. now, after your two hour workshop, they are talking about how to fix some problems we have had for years. Well done!”

At our advanced workshops for teachers (please always start with basic program) we role play many issues facing teachers including relations with students, parents, admin and other teachers. We are the ice breakers and start the conversation. Similar to our corporate team building and communications workshops – which we have presented to Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan,. Johnson & Johnson and 100’s others – staff meetings following our presentation will be your most productive.

WHY IMPROV COMEDY

Don’t trust me on the subject. Below is possibly the best pitch ever made for our programs made by Lisa Palotti (Speech Teacher)  to John Renner (Principal) from Summit School Queens following a day of shows and workshops. Since this email came to me 4 years ago, we have regularly returned to the Summit school including weekly classes year round.

“Here’s my report:  OMG it was awesome!  Truly one of the best activities I’ve ever seen take place here at Summit!  We gave them a very large group of kids to work with, and they handled them wonderfully.  The way that they related to the kids was terrific, and the activities they led worked on so many pragmatic language skills in SUCH an effective way, including increasing the kids’ awareness of their bodies in space, body proximity, eye contact, voice, and generally how others perceive them from their non-verbal cues.  They also did word association and one-word stories that involved verbal expression and required kids to follow a story line. Almost all of the kids looked like they were having a fantastic time, and it was an activity where the shy kids could get to interact with others in a very structured (hence comfortable) way.  At the end I spoke to the three members of the improv group and raved about how great they were and told them the specific ways that the activities helped our students.  They asked me a number of questions, such as regarding how to handle various students’ behaviors, and we talked about upcoming activities.”

A Scientific Case for why We NEED Laughter

Humor and creativity work in similar ways, says humor guru William Fry, M.D., of Stanford University–by creating relationships between two disconnected items, you engage the whole brain.

This defines what we do in Improv every day!!!

When I was a kid, my grandfather introduced me to “Readers Digest: Laughter Is The Best Medicine.” While those stories/articles were not meant to be truly medical in purpose, turns out they were on to something big….

For years we – the cast and administration at EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH – were all about being the most fun a school ever had on a field trip or at an assembly. Or we just aimed to simply entertain at a Corporate Team Building event. Then in recent years, thanks to feedback from clients, teachers and parents, we realized we offered so much more, inspiring and teaching creativity, community and leadership. But now science tells us that perhaps our greatest gift to the students is the laughter!

This blog is designed for teachers and administrators of K-12 students. HOWEVER, the case can be made for college and corporate settings as well. While our shows, workshops and residencies are incredibly valuable for Team Building, Public Speaking, Performance Training, Writing, Leadership and so much more, the pure entertainment factor of the laughs we generate in every show – and participating in creating scenes during workshops and residencies – may be the of the highest value to all…

All of the following are clips from various medical websites and blogs reporting on the subject….

What can laughter do?

Here are just some benefits for mental, physical and social health

•Lower blood pressure
•Increase vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood
•Give a workout to the diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles
•Reduce certain stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline
•Increase the response of tumor- and disease-killing cells such as Gamma-interferon and T-cells
•Defend against respiratory infections–reducing the frequency of colds–by immunoglobulon in saliva.
•Increase memory and learning; in a study at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, humor
during instruction led to increased test scores
•Improve alertness, creativity, and memory

FROM http://www.laughteryogaamerica.com/services/laughter-education-733.php
In children social play is critical to the development of social skills and emotional intelligence. Restricted play results in deficient social skills which can lead to life-long physical, mental, emotional and social problems. Laughter promotes childlike playful behavior. New research shows that playful adults continue to learn social skills and improve their emotional intelligence. Learning requires that one lower what linguists call the “affective barrier.” You can’t be uptight and learn much. You have to ease up and laugh to create.

Our program always begins with a show demonstrating the art of Improv Comedy, getting the entire student body and staff laughing together. Workshops and Master Classes teach the basics of Creativity, Community and Leadership. Residencies develop future leaders while preparing for a public performance with in depth discovery into creative writing and thinking, public speaking, self-confidence and more.

OUTREACH PROGRAM HISTORY

EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH played its first show in 2002. At that time the show focused on sketch and music with a touch of Improv mixed in to add interactive element. When Farmington, CT schools called in 2003, working “clean” was not our focus – never mind educational intent. But being a new troupe hungry for gigs we said “OF COURSE.”

Soon after, we realized a niche under served by New York theater – quality family friendly affordable shows. There was Disney on Broadway, and “kids” theater comprised mostly of puppets, magic and horrible “original” versions of fairy tales which bored teens and parents. With rare exception, there was nothing fun the entire family could sit through.

So starting in 2005, the troupe was 90% focused on clean comedy for families and corporate crowds. Immediately schools, camps and other non-profits loved the new option. As a niche show, groups found us online. And we grew quickly thanks to word of mouth and social media. We never really advertised or marketed the shows. And every year we have grown exponentially as groups return. Now we go to schools and students say “I saw you at my summer camp” and vice versa. But that’s OK as no two shows are ever the same, and student, scared to participate prior, now lead their groups in the interactions.

After the 2008 economic crash, we suffered a slight decline, but we were still the relatively new kid on the block. We reduced our prices slightly to help our regulars and new clients continue to enjoy our services. But our field trip base rates ($10-25pp for show, workshop and or lunch) have not changed in 12 years. Most other groups need to raise rates to cover growing over head, but improv has little to no overhead, and our successful grass roots / “word-of-mouth” model add no marketing overhead, which allows us to continue to pass on those savings to you.

In 2009, the Comedy Hall of Fame named Walt Frasier – Artistic Director of NEW YORK IMPROV THEATER (AKA Eight IS Never Enough, LMAO, Improv 4 Kids / teens) as Director of Instruction. Mr Frasier developed a series of programs for New York City Schools including classes where student received fine arts or English elective graduation credits. Mr. Frasier has since stepped away to focus on this growing program, but our teachers still run those programs in school and after school.

Now as schools cut out the arts more and more from their curriculum, principals, teachers, and parents realize the importance of a program like ours – a program that reaches far beyond the circle of “theater kids” to deliver invaluable skills you cannot learn in the new TEST-TAKING focused educational system.

Nore, known for his energetic performances and magnetic stage presence, has appeared on Comedy Central, MTV, and Gotham Comedy Live on AXS TV. His talents have also earned him television-acting roles on shows that include,Inside Amy Schumer, Last Week Tonight and the Emmy award winning HBO series Boardwalk Empire.Chris Distefano

Described as a high energy comic, Chris Distefano acts out a variety of characters derived from his life, typically leaving you on the edge of your seat wondering: “Who the hell is that he’s talking about?” Chris has worked at all of the top comedy clubs across New York City including, but not limited to, Gotham Comedy Club, Carolines on Broadway and The Comic Strip. Chris still lives in Brooklyn, NY with his Mom (punch line).

Chris has a Bachelors degree in Psychology to impress his mom’s friends and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy to impress his mom’s friend’s moms. That kind of thinking got him on the SNY network as the host of the Fencing Masters at Hammerstein Ballroom. It also got him all the way to the Elite 8 of the March Madness Comedy Competition at the world famous Carolines on Broadway (two years in a row). Chris also was selected to headline Carolines on Broadway Breakout Artist Series and was selected as a finalist in the New York Comedy Festival. Chris has opened up for comedy legends such as Richard Lewis, Gilbert Gottfried and Artie Lange. Chris has been heard on Sirius XM radio, is a regular on MTV2’s “Guy Code” and his left elbow was featured on a national Subway commercial. It’s a good elbow. When he’s not making witty remarks or transforming into various personas on stage, you can find him stretching people’s hamstrings and getting yelled at to clean his room.

    Sean Donnelly

When he’s not catching a nap with his bulldog, Rickles, Sean can be found headlining clubs all over New York, including Caroline’s, Gotham, Stand Up NY, and The Stand. He has appeared on MTV’s World of Jenks and The Late Show with David Letterman. Sean was a Comic Stand-Off finalist at the 2010 Magners Comedy Festival, performed at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in 2011 and 2012, was a semi-finalist in the 2012 Boston Comedy Festival competition, and performed at Comedy Central’s 2013 South Beach Comedy Festival. Sean was a Montreal Just For Laughs “New Face” in 2013. He co-hosts the podcast My Dumb Friends with fellow comedian Dan St. Germain, soon to be broadcast on Comedy Central Sirius, and hosts a weekly show at Alligator Lounge in Brooklyn. Sean can be seen regularly on the TruTV series World’s Dumbest and on the forthcoming season of Adam Devine’s House Party on Comedy Central.

    Jon Fisch

Jon has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, has been featured in Maxim Magazine, and was the host of the widely popular podcast, “In the Tank”. A prolific monologist with universal appeal, Jon focuses on the idiosyncrasies of city living. Shortly after moving to NYC from his native Boston, he was chosen as one of Comedy Central’s Fresh Faces of Comedy and named one of Back Stage Magazine’s 10 Standout Stand-ups.

His appearance on Last Comic Standing 4 – where he was the New York City Capital One Audience Favorite – earned him wide recognition and a new legion of fans. His other TV appearances include Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, VH1, Celebrity Apprentice, and 3 Men and a Chick Flick on the WE Network where he served as a host. Interestingly, the credit people seem most impressed by was that he was handpicked to open for Jerry Seinfeld in 2009 at Gotham Comedy Club

Jon has performed at multiple festivals including the 2007 HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and the 2010 Great American Comedy Festival at the Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk, Nebraska. In addition, he was a critical favorite at the prestigious Montreal “Just for Laughs” Festival where he appeared in both the “New Faces” showcase and the Club Series show “Dating It.” Following his impressive performances, Jon was singled out by the Hollywood Reporter and the Montreal Gazette as a “stand out performer”. Most recently, he was invited to perform at this year’s TBS “Just For Laughs” Comedy Festival in Chicago.

Jon also tours the country performing in theaters and colleges, corporate events and clubs. A staple in the NYC scene, he is a favorite at Gotham Comedy Club, the Comedy Cellar, and the World Famous Comic Strip Live.

    Marina Franklin

New-York based Marina Franklin is emerging as one of the hottest comedians in the comedy scene today, with such notable appearances as, Wanda Syke’s Herlarious, Showtime’s Women Who Kill, Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show, The Jay Leno Show, Chappelle’s Show, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, NBC’s Last Comic Standing Season II, and Showtime at The Apollo.

She is a favorite in Comedy Festivals across the world, like Melbourne Comedy Festival, Scotland’s Glasgow Comedy Festival, BBC’s World Stand’s Up, Rotterdam’s Comedy Factory, Montreal’s Just For Laughs, Ireland’s Kilkenny Comedy Festival, and Nashville’s Bonnaroo Music Festival. Franklin’s career in entertainment wasn’t always in stand-up comedy; originally from Chicago, she made her acting debut at the Illinois Rep Theatre. She then quickly realized her love for acting and went on to pursue a MFA in acting at Syracuse University. Franklin is viciously likeable, if there is such a thing.

    Harrison Greenbaum

Harrison began performing stand-up comedy while studying psychology and English at Harvard.  A summa cum laudegraduate, Harrison was the co-founder of the Harvard College Stand-Up Comic Society (or “Harvard College SUCS,” as the group’s name is cheekily acronymized), the first organization at Harvard dedicated to the performance and appreciation of stand-up comedy and one still popular on campus today.

Now living in Manhattan, Harrison has quickly become one of the most in-demand comedians in New York, performing in more than 600 shows a year and thus leading bothTime Out New York and the NY Daily News to call him “the hardest-working man in comedy.”  One of Comedy Central’s “Comics to Watch,” Harrison has also received many awards and honors for his comedy, including the Andy Kaufman Award (2010) for creativity and originality in comedy, the Shorty Award in collaboration with Comedy Central and the New York Comedy Festival for “Best Emerging Comic” (2011),and the Magners Comic Stand-Off (2011).

On television, Harrison was featured on AXS.TV’s Gotham Comedy Live and National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games, was a regular panelist on CurrentTV’s Viewpoint, and has appeared on MTV, SPIKE TV, the Discovery Channel, and the Science Channel. Behind the scenes, Harrison was a producer for Primetime: Would You Fall for That? on ABC (which premiered in 2013 to over 3.5 million viewers) and a story producer for VH1’sThis is HOT 97, and was the warm-up comic for Katie, Katie Couric’s daytime talk show on ABC.

Internationally recognized for his talent, Harrison was the head writer for Tu Nite con Lorenzo Parro, the first-ever late night show on NBCU/Telemundo; was a featured correspondent on the Japanese television show, Scooper, which was broadcast nationally on Nippon TV; and was a featured act in the Magners Glasgow International Comedy Festival in Scotland. Harrison was also the co-host and featured performer of the official Times Square New Year’s Eve World Wide Webcast in 2010 and 2011, broadcasting live to over 250 million viewers around the globe.

Harrison also headlines comedy clubs around the country, including sold-out shows at TBS Just for Laughs Chicago and the legendary Carolines on Broadway (leading Punchline Magazine to name Harrison one of the “Breakout Artists” of the year).  Harrison has also been featured in a wide variety of national and international publications, including being highlighted for the “Joke of the Week” in TimeOut NYand being featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, andCNBC.com.

Harrison’s one-man show, Harrison Greenbaum: What Just Happened?, debuted at the legendary New York comedy hotspot, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, before commencing an Off-Broadway run and international tour. (For more information on the show, visit the show’s official site here.)

Harrison is a talented comedy writer as well.  He is a nationally published author (with selections printed in the books, 50 Successful Harvard Essays, 2nd ed., and How They Got Into Harvard) and has been a writer for MAD Magazine since 2005.

From colleges to comedy clubs, from talk shows to theaters, Harrison is bringing his unique style of comedy to audiences across the country and around the world, proving each night why publications such as Newsday have named him one of “today’s best.”

    Calise Hawkins

The story of me? I’ve done stand up comedy on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on NBC, “Russell Simmons Presents Stand Up at the El Rey” on Comedy Central, “Stand Up In Stilletos” on TV Guide Channel, “Gotham Live” on AXS tv, two episodes of “Nick Mom Night Out” on Nick Jr, and two seasons of “Last Comic Standing” on NBC.

    CHRIS MURPHY

Chris Murphy is one of the most experienced comedy teachers in New York City. He has been in the business over 20 years and teaching over 15. He is also a well-respected comedian by his pears. He has appeared on the same shows as comedy legends as Ray Romano, Louie CK, Colin Quinn, Dave Attell, Sarah Silverman, Brett Butler and Bill Hicks.

Chris Murphy has appeared on A&E’s Evening at the Improv, and Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn where he was also a contributing writer. He has done TV show warm ups. Louie CK personally reached out to Chris to be featured in a sketch Louie wrote for Caroline’s Comedy Hour. On the other side of the microphone, Chris also managed the world famous New York Original Improvisation.

Chris’s students work constantly. They have appeared on The Tonight Show, Conan, Late Late Show, Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd, MTV, and Star Search, Hit sit-com Yes Dear, Dr. Katz, Sarah Silverman Program and Men of a Certain Age. Several students have had their own Comedy Central Presents special. Still others have written for Saturday Night Live!

    Brian McFadden

Often called “The Father of Modern Stand Up Comedy” Brian Scott McFadden is one of the most incredibly hilarious & frustratingly unappreciated actor/writer/comedians working today, a performer as remarkably gifted as he is inexplicably unacknowledged. After an undenyingly brilliant & insufficiently lauded performance on The Late Show with David Letterman, Brian followed with an equally spectacular & similarly overlooked appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS. He was most recently seen tearing up the big screen in Ben Stiller’s all star blockbuster “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” in a performance both stunning in its complexity & unfortunate in its brevity. Brian has also just released his new Comedy CD “What Women Want” which has been met with a deceptively small but optimistically moderate level of industry enthusiasm.

    Wali Collins

New York City’s number one comedian. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Wali was and still is an accomplished drummer. Not only currently being a member of the Central Park Djembe drummers. Wali has played in R&B, Pop, Funk and Jazz bands. Wali toured with the award winning Lawrence Bagwell Gospel Choral before graduating High School. And he was the youngest to ever join the New England Jazz Society. After College, Wali was working on being the best Architect New England has ever known. But the calling for show business was too strong. He played in bands, did session work, but that wasn’t enough. He needed more.

Always having a keen sense of humor, his parents urged him to try stand-up comedy. His first time on stage Wali was convinced that he had bombed, but the manager paid him and asked him to come back every week as a featured act. Wali Collins has been going strong ever since. Wali moved to New York City to work on a show for Comedy Central called “Stand-up Stand-up”. He hosted the largest funniest, most varied collection of stand-up comedians in the world.

He was nominated three years in a row as “College Campus Entertainer of the Year”. Wali is also the most sought after comedian for corporate events. IBM, L’Oreal, General Motors, Johnson & Johnson, FedEx, Subway restaurants, Game Stop are just a few of the many companies. One of Wali’s greatest achievements was hosting an event featuring for First Lady Michelle Obama. The show went so well he was asked to host another event this time featuring both Presidents Bush and Obama.

Wali Collins is a regular at all of the main stream Comedy clubs in the United States including New York City and Los Angeles. He even headlines and tours at Comedy clubs in Europe and Asia.

Collins’ television credits include NBC, CBS, FOX, HBO, ABC’s “The View”, Comedy Central’s The Dave Chappelle show, Commentary on VH1, to name a very few. David Letterman caught Wali’s act and recruited him to warm-up for his show. Later that season Wali performed his stand up on the “Late Show with David Letterman”. Quoted by GQ magazine “Wali’s true purpose becomes evident”.

He also landed a role in the Jerry Brucheimer hit film “Coyote Ugly”. Wali also was featured in the sitcom “Spin City” and hosted the PBS series special, “Wild TV”. If Wali’s face looks familiar to you it’s because you’ve seen him in over 30 national television commercials.

In the words of Robert Klein, “Wali Collins is versatile, smart and very, very funny.” Wali is headed only one way, Stardom. If you haven’t seen Wali do his thing in either stand up or acting, you’re missing out on one gifted man.

    Dean Obeidallah

Born in the Great State of New Jersey, Dean’s comedy comes in large part from his unique background of being the son of a Palestinian father and a Sicilian mother. Dean, an award winning comedian who was at one time a practicing attorney, co-starred on Comedy Central’s “The Axis of Evil” Comedy TV special. He is the co-creator of Comedy Central.com’s critically acclaimed Internet series “The Watch List” featuring a cast of all Middle Eastern-American comedians performing stand up and sketch comedy. Dean has appeared twice on ABC’s “The View,” on the nationally syndicated TV series “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen” and was one of five comedians profiled in the recent one hour TV Special entitled: “Stand Up: Muslim-American Comics Come of Age” which aired in the US on PBS and internationally on BBC World and Al Jazeera.

    JJ Ramirez

Known as “The Latin Lunatic” J.J. Ramirez tours the country as a national headliner. He can be heard frequently on The Howard Stern Show. One of New York’s very best headliners, a regular at America’s top tier clubs including The World Famous Comic Strip, The Improv and Carolines On Broadway. On television, J.J. has appeared on A&E’s “Comedy on the Road”, “Evening at the Improv”, Showtime at the Apollo, Fox’s “Comic Strip Live” and Comedy Central. In the casinos, J.J is also well-entrenched having appeared at Atlantic City’s Borgata Casino and The Tropicana in Las Vegas. He is also featured in the award winning movie The Latin Legends of Comedy.

Harrison has also been featured in a wide variety of national and international publications, including being highlighted for the “Joke of the Week” in TimeOut NYand being featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and CNBC.com.

Beyond self-enrichment and fun, the classes help develop creative thinking and writing, self confidence, public speaking skills, team building, listening, eye contact, and focus.

WINTER 2015 Calendar

2015classes

Saturdays 11am-12:45pm

We have a quickly growing program but we found we have many families that wish to enroll siblings and even parents in programs but due to busy schedule cannot make multiple weekly trips to the club. So now the entire family can enroll. We have a unique comedy school in that we combine stand-up and improv in many of our classes. While improvisation is always the focus, including the stand-up allows students to strongly develop creative writing and thinking. We have a very simple method to develop original material that all can enjoy. And you will all find techniques and experience from one spill over to help the other skill.

COMEDY 4 KIDS ages 7-10 & 10-12

We have two teachers for this program and will be splitting up based on age and experience.

COMEDY 4 TEENS ages 13-17

Many of our teens are in their 4th-5th season with us, but we welcome new teens as well.

COMEDY 4 ADULTS ages 18+

This class has college students, parents and even professional artists looking to self enrich and develop strong skills in Improv.

PRIVATE GROUPS

We host private groups almost daily for workshops and master classes. Every session starts with a group warm-up and technique games. Time permitting (not much needed) we start a master class of performance games.

Corporate Team Building – We have worked with top execs from Johnson & Johnson, Sales Managers from Louis Vuitton and even claims auditors from the United States Medicare. Drop in for a workshop. Stay for a show and lunch. Flexible options for your schedule, budget and specific team needs. Our basic workshop gets the team laughing, playing and simple problem solving together as they create original stories and scenes. Advanced workshops include role playing and more to attack more specific problems in your workplace – HR nightmares, sales, customer service, management, sexual harassment and more…

Theater Groups – Many professional, community and educational theater groups love an Improv Workshop. Improv is one of the most important skills in developing scripted material that truly leaps off the page. Also, we open up your creativity and break down acting techniques away from being stuck by the script. Many groups go back and create their own Improv teams at their home theater and school.

Educational Outreach – We have blogs and documents galore on why every school should incorporate improv in their programs. We offer an inexpensive way to get the arts back into schools. We incredibly enhance any arts program you currently offer. And we use these wonderfully entertaining shows and workshops to teach invaluable life skills. We teaching artists have been in schools since the beginning of time… But by branding our programs as “COMEDY” we reach a far broader demographic. Students use comedy every day to deal with stress. Often that displays as disruptive behavior.

BRING IMPROV TO YOUR COMMUNITY

WHY? READ MORE….

We can send our teachers and shows nationwide. Great for K-12 schools, camps and non-profit educational settings for cultural arts, language arts and character building. Improv makes for amazing team building in Corporate setting. Perfect education  and entertainment for any community or religious center.

Drop in Shows & Workshops

Need a quick diversion or filling a calendar with a great cultural arts program, we can simply provide an amazing show, perhaps with a bonus educational talk back session or workshop after the show. The touring company has performed nationwide at theaters, clubs, colleges, K-12 schools, camps, libraries and private/corporate events.

Residencies

We can send you a teacher or cast of teaching artists for a week of sessions OR in design a weekly program in the New York Area. Progressive programs, ending with a performance by the students, develop strong leaders in the community. In a few schools, via the Comedy Hall of Fame, our students have the best attendance records and do better than most in other classes. By teaching students valuable skills (focus, listen, eye contact, public speaking) they are more confident to participate in other classes and absorb information faster. We teach students how to learn- THE FUN WAY!!! We have even hired a few of these students right out of high school for our summer programs.

Residency for the Whole School

Our teaching Artist(s) will enter each class room and present a master class in warm-up, technique and performance games. Depending on the size of your school one teaching artists could spend 1-3 hours with every class in a week.

Progressive Classes

Every program is unique based on your needs, scheduling and budget. But all progressive programs center around one group of students – 10-20 recommended – developing more skills and knowledge of performance. The programs work best with a performance showcase. With this goal, the students rise to the occasion and excel. You will be amazed at the hidden talents in your ranks.

ONE WEEK RESIDENCY

Our teaching artists will meet with the students for about 20 hours in a week.

4-15 week weekly classes

Schedules vary. In a perfect world we meet for eight 90-120 minute sessions – Weekly, Bi weekly, very flexible. But every program varies based on your schedule needs. In some schools – via comedy hall of fame – we even have teachers for 35-40 weeks with high school students that can receive graduation electives upon completion. In other schools we do a 4-5 week survey course. We will design the program that maximizes potential within your time and budget.

CORPORATE TEAM BUILDING

We offer customized team building events designed by Walt Frasier (Featured as Life Coach / Team Specialist on WE Network’s hit show “Hair Trauma”, as well as actor on “Lilyhammer”, “Royal Pains”, “Blue Bloods”, “Letterman” etc)  Mr. Frasier uses basic improvisational techniques to motivate creative thinking, trouble shooting, problem solving among  teams and groups. We can host a Team Building Workshop at our resident theatre and comedy club in the heart of Times Square. We can also bring our team to your event or place of business. Our corporate clients include Johnson & Johnson, Morgan Stanley, Amex, Master Card, Medicade, Kraft, UBS, General Motors, Louis Vuitton, and 100s more.

DAY TIME SEMINAR

Our most popular package delivers great release and team building. Below is the program we host in Times Square at the Broadway Comedy Club but we can export this nationwide. We have amazing rates that fit the new post-2008 budgets.

ARRIVAL

Upon arrival, we have a continental breakfast of yogurt, mini bagels and donuts with coffee, juice and bottled water.

MORNING WORKSHOP

We kick off activities with a 90-120 minute workshop of Improv Games to Warm Up, develop basic techniques and even play some classic performance games. The shear laughing together builds strong bonds, but the team also works together to create original stories and scenes. We can customize the program to meet your specific needs. Although I recommend to start simple, we can include situation role play – Sales, Service, Problem Solving, Corporate Communications and more.

LUNCH

We have many options ranging $20-200pp (Usually for holiday parties and corporate dinners). But for these we recommend the light buffet of gourmet wraps, salads, chips and cookies. This menu keeps the budget in check and the mood informal.

SHOW

Relax while Lunch is winding down and sit back as the professionals perform their signature Musical Improv show that has played off-Broadway and toured nationwide. The show is very interactive so the team building is not over yet… Every game requires suggestions from the audience and many include volunteers on stage. So bring your cameras – video too – to capture some great moments for your website and social media.
